Bedtime hell

We're in the process of completely re-sleep training DS. I don't know what the fuck happened. He was sleeping through the night until just before Christmas. Then it all went to shit. He's extremely clingy at bedtime. He either wants me to rock him or stand there and rub his back until he's asleep. Which I don't really have a problem with. The issue is he'll randomly wake up at 2, 3 or 4 o clock in the morning and expect to be soothed to sleep in the same manner. Which doesn't always work and he flips out if I try to leave the room at all. So last night I decided to let him cry it out. It lasted two hour (with me going up to check on him every 10-15 minutes). I was in tears :(

Maybe something developmental is going on? He's been really stubborn and fighting me during the day as well. On everything. Going to the bathroom, changing clothes, eating lunch...etc. Anyone else going through this?

Re: Bedtime hell

  • Mac has never been a good sleeper, he went through a bit of a 'sleep progression' and then back to normal. For a while we would get in the crib with him to get him back to sleep. Then he got sick with a horrible cough/cold so we started bringing him into our bed when he woke up.

I hate to admit, but he still gets a bottle of water in his crib when he goes to bed. He takes a bit when falling asleep, talks to himself, and eventually falls asleep. On the rare nights he doesn't need us to come to him, we give him the bottle with more water than usual and he will drink it when he wakes and puts himself back to sleep.

He's so stubborn, we did sleep training around 7-8m and he did well, but then went back to his old ways. We tried after that, but I always gave in after 1.5hrs with checks every 10-20mins.

We just went through this (still in it) and several days after it started, dd got a cold.  I will sleep with her, sleep in her room, cuddle, whatever usually to get through it.  CIO doesn't work here, it only gets worse and is that much more traumatic for us.  I woke up with a sore throat this morning but have no cold (yet)....it's always possible that they just feel crappy for days before/after but can't tell us.  Hang in there, it will get better!  Eventually! :)

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

Same here. CIO hasn't worked well for us because DD will literally cry for hours if I'd let her, and she stands up in her crib. The last time I tried it she started dozing off while standing up and I was scared she'd fall and hit her head or something.

She's getting over a cold and is having a terrible time falling asleep most nights because of the congestion and is usually waking up between 3 and 4 due to congestion and/or coughing, so then I end up sitting with her in the rocking chair so she can breathe better. I've mostly been able to get her back in her crib, but occasionally have resorted to bringing her into bed.

I'm hoping once she gets totally better we can get back into our usual routine of book, nursing and rocking, falling asleep quickly, and STTN!

  • Yes, about a month ago this was happening every fraking night.  We have DS2 in a bed (no crib) so when he woke up in the middle of the night, I just went into his room and went to sleep there with him.  It was the fastest way for us all to get back to sleep!  Good news is that he hasn't done it now for a few weeks (knocking on so much wood right now!)

  • Thanks ladies. I really am hoping this is just a short phase. I feel like I need to watch some super nanny or something. That bitch always knows what to do ;)

  • We are having the birthday freak out.  Or maybe it's just holiday weirdness.  She has a tantrum, complete with shrieks, about every 10 minutes.  She wants to use bottles instead of cups and only wants milk.  I have no idea what is up.
  • After sleeping thru the night Mine wakes up again now one time a night but he's getting all 4 vampire teeth lol so far he's had the hardest with these. I wish they'd come in fast so we go back to all night sleeps

  • E is in the same boat. E are having total nighttime freak fests. It is awful. I feel like someone it's always crying at this house and i can't get a break. But E is cutting 2 new molars and has the teething diaper rash from hell. :( So I suspect that is our culprit.

  • We've been sick here along with getting the last 1year molar and 2 canine teeth. DD has never been a good sleeper. We had a good pattern of only one wake up around 3 then right back asleep. That ended about 2 months ago. Now we wake up around 11 every night and it's a fight to get her back to sleep and to sleep the rest of the night. And naps are even worse. I hope this ends soon as I am the only one that deals with it all day and night. Mama needs a break! I feel for everyone. Oh and we've had a diaper rash from he** also. Won't go away and is soo painful. Plus the screaming tantrums that happen anytime she doesn't get exactly what she wants.

  • Have y'all tried the desitin max on the bad diaper rashes? That has worked in the past for us. We also use CJs BUTTer.

  • That sounds terrible. We've been having some sleep issues with night wakings for a while (after previously having slept through the night), but the wakings are much briefer than what you're dealing with. It's usually related to not being able to find their blankies in the crib and wanting to be recovered with their larger blankets.

Is it possible that your son is getting teeth? I know that has led to some terrible sleep for my kids. I wonder if dosing him with some Tylenol would make a difference. Although if you're thinking that this has more to do with stubborness/willfulness, then disregard the Tylenol suggestion!

Also, it may sound silly, but every night at bedtime, we explain to the kids what we expect of them (sleep all the way through the night, until the sun is shining in the morning, and if you wake up and it's still dark out, look for your blankie and go back to sleep). Surprisingly this has helped some of their sleep issues and decreased the number and length of our night wakings now that they can really understand what we're talking about.

It may be worthwhile to rethink your bedtime routine. It makes sense that however he's being soothed at bedtime is also what he'll expect when he wakes at night. Does he have anything in the crib to help him self-soothe?

This may also be related to increasing frustration about not getting what he wants in general. My DD has majorly hit the tantrum stage and has routinely been having 45 minute out of control tantrums, some of them in the middle of the night. Riding these tantrums out both during the day and night has helped, even though it's really ugly and unpleasant for all of us. We don't give in, and I think after a few weeks of this she's learning that it's not worth the effort. But boy, has it been ugly.

  • For the diaper rash we have tried....desitin paste and creamy, aquaphor, butt paste, avveno cream, burts bees cream, and we just started triple paste. The dr recommend the medicine and then A&D with zinc on top. So we are trying that now........ I think it's a combination of teething and sickness that's causing it. But it's soo bad that even running naked hurts.

I have, but it's not working. I've also tried Calendula by Weleda, and Triple Paste. At this point, I think time is going to be our only cure. :(

  • So last night was much better. He only cried a little bit when we put him down for bed. Daddy has the magic touch right now. I don't know what it is. No middle of the night wake ups either :)

DS's sitter posted this on my wall the other night.

  • Thank you @luxannie‌ We were able to see our doctor that we love yesterday. The first thing he said was due to everything you have tried I'm guessing it's a yeast rash. So he prescribed nystatin and A&D with zinc. I have to check in with him on Friday to see if it's better. The last doctor we saw said that it's no way a yeast rash and prescribed the same meds that I had been using for 2 weeks. I don't like him. He also said that we needed to go dairy free as that could be a cause. Ugh!
