starting BLW

My LO will be 6mo on Christmas and I plan to start BLW this weekend. We tried giving him rice cereal but he just spits it out so I don't want to continue with that.

What is your experience with BLW? Success/not so much? What were some of the first foods you tried?

Thanks!!!!!!!

Re: starting BLW

  • We aren't doing proper BLW but babe is 6 months and gets puree at daycare, and at home she gets some of whatever we're eating, and we also offer a puree. So, once she turned 6 months we started offering finger foods at every meal we eat with her. I'm sure since she's not proper BLW it will take her longer to get it, but right now it's still scary because she still hasn't figured out how to not take huge chunks and she gags on the food a lot of the time. @amberatkins8 did your babe do this? If so, how long did it take him to stop?

  • We're doing half BLW - too hard when we don't have support from daycare/family. We have daycare give DS oatmeal at school and then at night I try giving him mashed foods and pieces of steamed veggies or whatever we are eating. He seems to do well with either. We just started a few weeks ago so he's not "chewing" the food yet, just kind of gnawing.

He likes broccoli, peppers, sweet potatoes and turkey so far. Good luck!!

  • I am all for BLW but have realized that it makes me a nervous wreck.  I don't know if I'm giving him pieces too big or too small and am so scared he's going to choke.

@fsumom‌ I'm in the exact same position!! I would love for my babe to get used to feeding herself but I'm absolutely terrified of choking! Anyone have any tips or reassuring comments for us?!
  • I've been really nervous about this too, but I've noticed giving DS long (about 1-2inch) pieces of food help him. He can nibble off as much as he likes and he is learning how much is too much. Also, softer foods are working better for him. He loves cantaloupe, avocado, broccoli, asparagus and a little cheese here and there

    Good luck!!
