NPR: Readers, come in!

So I'm curious to see if anyone would like to do a reading check-in once in a while. Perhaps this will motivate me to keep up with my books, but I also love hearing recommendations/thoughts on what others are reading too.  I know many people are reading pregnancy books (whelp, I've read none), but I'm hoping to keep up with everyday reads too. If you'd like something like this, please chime in and I'll set up a post every other week or so (unless you'd prefer weekly).

Also, has anyone used BookBub? Lately I'm struggling to find free books to read on my nook as my options on Overdrive from my library are starting to dwindle.

Re: NPR: Readers, come in!

  • Bump book club?!
I need motivation to get off the internet and read again!
  • Loading the player...
  • I actually use Oyster. Like Netflix, but for books (yeah, I know, the library... But this way you don't have to leave the house.) The titles are pretty interesting and I've gotten some great reading in!

I feel sooo bad about how much I've let reading go lo these past weeks.... I sleep when I'm not working and if I'm not sleeping, I'm trying to sleep. :(

    I'd lurk a check-in!

Same here. I always have a book to read, but I'm forever wasting all my valuable reading time on Facebook or The Bump or Pinterest...

And @vintagevixenmommy I read like half of the Mayo Clinic pregnancy book, got super bored and stopped. As a FTM, I should probably give it another try...but it's just too boring.

I'm reading Dune right now (my dad's suggestion-it's his favorite). I don't hate it, but I'm kind of ready to finish it so I can move on to something else.

  • I love to read! Love to talk about books!

Currently reading mystery/thriller brain candy: Frozen by Kate Watterson
And Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.

I also love GoodReads. I tend to read several books at a time fiction, non-fiction, and sometimes brain candy novels
  • I use Overdrive too. My current library has a crappy selection of ebooks, but my library card from before I moved still works and my dad lets me use his, so between the 3, I can usually find what I'm looking for.

I'm currently reading the third book in the Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch.

I've never heard of BookBub or Oyster... I'm off to Google them now!

I bought a Nook a while back and enjoy reading it while I'm walking on the treadmill at the gym (which I didn't really do for a couple of months due to severe nausea).  I also take a bath most nights and put it in a ziploc(!) but lately I've been vegging out in the tub...

I was upset with myself on my Goodreads count for last year because I was doing so well until October - I know I would have hit my goal had I kept my pace.  I'm not setting a "goal" amount for the year because I don't know what this year will bring, but I love to read and need it to be a part of my life!

  • Yay! I have some anxiety about how baby will change my relationship with DH (I've seen lots of pretty unfortunate dynamics with family and friends) so I'm reading Partnership Coparenting. I'm actually finding it pretty helpful and think it'll be useful for years to come. My last fun fiction read was The Goldfinch, but that feels like a long time ago. Great idea, OP!
  • Oh yeah, and as for me I'm currently reading One Plus One by Jojo Moyes.  If you haven't read Me Before You, also by Moyes, and need a good ol' fashioned ugly cry, it's a good bet!

Loved the Goldfinch, but was feeling a little meh about the ending!

I'm reading Boys In the Boat right now. If my pregnancy brain ADHD wasn't in overdrive I would have finished it already. Highly reccomend Serena by Ron Rash -one of my favorite books from last year. Saw the movie is finally being released in March too for anyone who is a fan of Jennifer Lawrence/Bradley Cooper films. Love the Bump Book Club idea.
  • I would definitely be interested in book recommendations.

I just finished "Sh!t No one Tells you About the First Year". I'm a FTM so I appreciated the author's humor mixed with the honesty about what happens during the first year.

A friend recommended Happiest Baby on the Block so I am just starting to read it now.

I would love to hear what others are reading. As a FTM I want to have as many tools/resources as possible!

Yeah, I liked the middle of the Goldfinch. Started off kind of slow and ended pretty meh, but I don't regret reading it.

  • One of my New Year's Resolutions was to finish this stack of books I've accumulated recently....

    image

Right now I'm reading Storm at the Door (and technically The Retribution of Mara Dyer, but in the interest of finishing my stack, I'm just focusing on the former)

  • I would love a book check in. I'm currently reading Anne of Green Gables since I've never read it before. Classics can be fun sometimes. I'm in the middle of the Game of Thrones series, but I had to take a break. It's sooo long. (I always chastise my students for saying that, but seriously, it's long.)
  • I love the idea of a check-in. And ditto on goodreads, although I'm not the best at keeping it updated with what I've read.

  • I'm definitely in. Currently reading Cost by Roxana Robinson. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Think I'll get into Game of Thrones after that as long as I don't read ahead of the TV series.
  • I love reading and think my energy level is back to the point where I can do it again. That sounds so ridiculous but you all understand.
I listen to books while I drive because I'm a super commuter (40-90 minutes each way every day) and found that it keeps me more alert plus extra books read! Currently in the 2nd Game of Thrones book. DH also listens while he drives and this is the first series we're doing together. I always read before I watch.
I'm a Kindle Unlimited member (like Netflix with ebooks if you have a Prime account, $10/month for 5 books at a time) and am working on The Hangman's Daughter series by Oliver Potzsch, translated (very well) by Lee Chadeaney. I think i read the first one last summer because it was a freebie. The rest of the books recently showed up on the list.
I've found that using things like Overdrive and free Kindle books has really changed my reading perspective. Especially using overdrive for listening. It's been good and taught me a lot more about what I could possibly like.
  • I'm up for a reading check in! Like @‌jessila9 I am an avid audio booker because I travel a lot (audible has been life changing).

@sensitivesally‌ mentioned a book club awhile back which I would also be interested in. We have a lot of readers on June 15!

I am currently listening to the second Divergent book. I have no shame. I was reading some darker stuff and needed something light. Next up is Big Little Lies! (After finishing the divergent series)

  • Thank you for posting this, it pushed me to finally download a book to listen to during my commute. I also set a goal on goodreads of 25 books. I only recorded ten on goodreads last year, so I might be setting my sights too high. I would definitely love to be part of a check-in.
  • I read at least 23 new books in 2014 and I love to re-read books so I'm not sure how many total. Judging by how little I read in first tri due to exhaustion, I'm sure this number will not be as high due to the baby's arrival, but we will see!

I am currently reading The Rosie Effect (follow up to The Rosie Project) and it's about a scientific man dealing with his less-logical wife's pregnancy, so it's fun to read so far.

Game of Thrones Book 5 is next. @nye373‌ is right, that series is SO long! But it's more challenging than some of the fiction books I've read so I have stuck with it for my brain. think it saved me from going into the 30s of new book quantity last year!

I LOVE the Anne series! I was obsessed when I was young and then reread a few years ago. I was surprised to find myself unable to put the books down, even when it was time to pick up my students!
  • I just read all the Harry Potter books :) I had never read them or seen any of the movies and they are part of Kindle Unlimited so I figured what the heck. LOVED them! So hard to figure out what to read after that. Last night I started reading a new romantic suspense by Tiffany Snow. Loved her Kathleen Turner series so I'm expecting this one to be pretty good. I'm still feeling so tired and lazy I wish I could lounge and read all day
  • @housewifebecomesher‌: The Divergent series rocks! Some YA novels are just as good as adult novels in my humble opinion.

Thanks for the heads up, @sensitivesally! I would have been seriously worried if you suddenly dropped off the face of TB!

I'm waiting for Proven Guilty, my next Harry Dresden book to come in. I ordered it on Amazon this morning. Finished Dead Beat yesterday evening.

ETA: I've been reading the pregnancy book my OB's office gave me a little bit each week. It's kind of like What to Expect, but more up to date and a little more medical. I'm enjoying it. You know, as much one enjoys something like that.
