Flu A +

Anyone else dealing with the flu?? I went to urgent care today for flu-like symtoms and I am indeed Flu A +. Doctor didn't want to give me Tamiflu because I am generally healthy....just said fluids and rest. Which isn't too easy with a 20 month old and I'm afraid him or my husband will get the flu from me!

Re: Flu A +

  • No advice, but I'm sorry you're sick.  Hope you feel better soon and that the rest of your family stays healthy!

  • I had a cold over Christmas. I don't think it was the flu though. I just made sure to rest and drink lots of fluid. I also monitored my temperature. Took about a week to feel somewhat normal but I got through it. Feel better!
  • the CDC guidelines reccomend Tamiflu for pregnant women. if you within 48hrs of symptom/fever onset, you should start it, if possible. it is expensive, and can make you feel achy and puke, but pregnancy is def a reason to be on tamiflu! if you are otherwise a normal healthy person, no, you wouldnt need it. call your OB in the AM, they should be able to get you an RX since you have a positive flu screen.

Omg I just got over the flu! It totally sucked and I feel your pain! All I took was Tylenol and ate chicken noodle soup ...any soups I could really lol my two kiddos had it and my hubby ended up getting it too! Xmas was sad we were all in bed and miserable! Ice packs helped me with headaches and showers for fever good luck hope you feel better soon ;)
  • I hope you feel better soon! Get lots of rest and drink plenty of OJ.
  • Tamiflu is a nasty drug. Side effects galore for minimal benefit at best. Glad your doctor didn't want to give it. Rest, increase fluids etc. Feel better soon.
  • Feel better soon.

  • No, I was not her "DR", but I am doctor (emergency medicine). Im not a fan of Tamiflu for most, but I do recommend it to my pregnant patients. She asked, just trying to give an educated answer backed by evidence, and stuff...
  • Hope you feel better soon! Ugh it's the worst! I had to over Thanksgiving. I have a 2 and an 8 year old too. Daddy works in another state. My cough turned into bronchitis then the little one got croup from me.. And also an ear infection. It was pretty much several weeks of sick hell. I just stopped coughing maybe a week ago. Anyways... Prayers you heal up fast. I feel your pain!

If you actually read her post, she said her DR didn't want to give her Tamiflu.
Yes, the urgent care doctor I saw, since it was Sunday, didn't want to prescribe it for the same reasons everyone has mentioned. He said he generally doesn't prescribe it for healthier, younger patients, even though I am pregnant. I did read about what the CDC recommends, but I have read about the side effects and it is a category C drug. I plan on calling my OB Monday morning to let them know I have the flu and see what they recommend. I have my regular 24 week appointment on Tuesday too so I want them to be aware before I show up in the office with the flu.

How long did your symtoms last? I know the cough can linger for a bit. My doctor said a week but I'm thinking that was a generous answer!

Yeah Tamiflu is Category C so no human studies to demonstrate safety in pregnancy. Most docs will give it "if benefit outweighs risk". So there is always a certain amount of risk taking it while pregnant but also risk with the flu. Personally, I would take it if I was prescribed it, but I am a fan if doctors looking at the individual case rather than a one-size-fits all solution. There may be a good reason they dont think it's necessary or a good idea for YOU. Your doctor may figure benefit does not outweigh risk in your case if your symptoms aren't too severe, or if your symptoms started more than 48 hours ago (it must be taken within 48 hours to be effective). I'm sorry you're sick, take good care of yourself and hope you feel better!

  • That being said it cant hurt to call your OB and get a second opinion, although you may be outside the 48 hr window now

But she already said in her OP her dr. didn't want to prescribe it to her...so it was not an educated suggestion if it had already been nixed.  An emergency medicine doctor who can't comprehend what they've read properly is concerning to me.

OP, I hope you feel better soon and your kids escape unscathed!
I second this post. OP, hang in there and feel better soon.

No Emergen-C during pregnancy. Too much vitamin A.
  • My OB office would not let me come in tomorrow for my appointment so I had to reschedule for next week!

wow, some of you ladies are so full of hate. sorry for all the drama HLA519, I sincerly wish you well. Ive never posted before, bc I read all of the ignorance that often follows, by random people, but I felt compelled to encourage you to seek a potentially life saving treatment. Lesson learned. and yes, I really have an MD and Ive hospitalized more than one pregnant lady this year for complications of the flu. Kudos to you for followinf up with your OB and not sharing the love at your doctors office, hope you stay hydrated and have a quick recovery!
  • I was recently diagnosed with flu A and just finished my last dose of tamiflu yesterday. I am otherwise healthy and young. My OB recommended I take Tamiflu because there are so many risks and complications involved with the flu. With the headache, fever, cough, and body aches I really thought I was dying... My doctor would not have recommended it if she thought it would cause harm to me or my baby. My advice is to try prevent yourself from getting it... Wash hands and stay away from "sick" people if you can, it is no fun!

    Psych.

There's no hate here, only ignorance on your part.  You aren't a doctor.  Any reputable doctor wouldn't give medical advice on a message board without some kind of disclaimer.  On top of that, she's already seen a real life doctor, who advised her the opposite way you did, so keep your fake medical advice to yourself.  Advising someone against what their own doctor said is irresponsible, unprofessional, and dangerous.
How long is medical school?  Like 100 years?  And in all that time (what I assume are a lot of papers to write, etc.), never learned to type.  Wonders.
