Bad heartburn

anyone have any suggestions for relieving heartburn? I've never had it in my life and it's so bad that i don't want to eat. So it's my chest hurts from eating or my stomach hurts from not eating. I ate three bananas and half a sándwich today.

Have you tried Tums or Rolaids? I'd start there. Next stop would be Zantac.
I've tried all three, and I'm fucking dying right now. Can you help me out?
I wish! Can we take Prilosec? I haven't asked the dr about that one yet.
Yes, I thought Prilosec was the same as Zantac. I'm mid-NYE party and freaking miserable. Everyone is hammered, and I'm feeling like shit.
Probably nothing you can do right now if you've already tried the above.  Drink water (maybe a small glass of milk), don't eat any more, and hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Sorry you're dealing with it on NYE.:(

  • My husbands fam swears by pickle juice to relieve all stomach upsets and heartburn. I haven't done it bc the thought of drinking pickle juice makes me want to die but it's worth a shot

I've heard this too but not going to try due to all of the salt contained in pickle juice.
  • Drink some milk and eat a piece of bread!! Miracle worker!

  • A couple of tsps of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water each morning. Seriously, it's a miracle cure!
  • I eat tums like a f*cking addict. Lol

  • I've just been prescribed Prevacid. My heartburn was so bad I'd wake up in the middle of the night with a mouth full of stomach acid. I have acid reflux pre pregnancy though so tums and Zantac do nothing.
  • I looked up a quick instant relief last week cause I couldn't get it to go away, been having the same problem and I read to have baking soda mixed with water... tried it and it immediately helped! Worth a shot. I had a Tums lastnight and that didn't help as much as the baking soda I'm still feeling it today tomorrow I'll probably do baking soda again. Good luck!
  • My midwife said Zantac & tums. I'm going through tums like they're candy. She also said that water & carbonated things (as well as acidic/spicy foods can make it worse). I've found milk to be good- especially chocolate milk.

I've heard that watermelon can help, and sleeping upright & not eating for a few hours before sleeping are all recommended.

  • I kept waking up with the burn, too. I was keeping it at bay with a daily Zantac 150 but yesterday at work it was bad enough that I opted for Tums in the AM as well. Still woke up hoarse and coughing from the reflux :(.
  • I use digestive enzymes with every meal, and my midwife suggested removing all grains, white sugar, and rice from my diet. It's has helped a ton, and I've found I can have about 1 serving of those things early in the day. For immediate relief, I use apple cider vinegar, milk, or tums- but tums gives me crazy burps. Good luck, I feel your pain!!
  • I have acid reflux disease, so being pregnant is especially difficult in that regard. My MFM and gastroenterologist have me taking OTC Prevacid (but my dosage is different than OTC dosages). Ask your doc if s/he is ok with that. It helps me. Take it in the morning, 30 min prior to eating. Tums have been worthless.

  • My heartburn is usually triggered when it's been awhile since I've ate. Once I eat, the heartburn starts. Try adding in a few healthy snacks as well if you're not already.
  • I had exactly the same. Since week 9!! I got a prescription from my doctor as the excess acid was actually making me sick so I wasn't keeping anything down. The tablet is called omiprezol. It's my lifesaver! I can eat normally again avoiding the real hardcore stuff that would give you heartburn even if you weren't pregnant. Hope you find a remidie. X
  • Prevacid should be category b as well
  • Just my two cents- you may want to watch what processed foods you eat.  I've noticed that the preservatives in some things give me heartburn that just won't quit.  It's usually after eating packaged snack cakes (I'm looking at you, Entenmann's) but other things have been known to do it, too.

  • I have a cocktail I use. Prescription Protonix once a day. ( good stuff) Prevacid Complete 2 times a day and tums here and there. Last pregnancy it was horrific. I'd sleep sitting up and still choke on my own stomach acid that was coming up the vomit on the acid which in turn caused me to pee my pants. I'd go through like 4 jammie bottoms a night. It sucked!
  • Tums. I carry them with me everywhere I go.

Haha yeah. I wish. I don't think you understand the pain. ;)
@snegde have you found something that works for you (I'm hoping one of us is feeling better anyway)?  I'm waiting on a call back from the nurse...hopefully she can suggest a cocktail like @JJBoden.  Zantac is not cutting it any longer, and Tums are a joke.

Zantac alone isn't working anymore for me either. I user both Zantac and Tums. That's working, for now.
  • Zantac isn't strong enough for me. I've had the prescription and it just isn't enough. Protonix needs a prior authorization with my insurance but it is covered since Zantac doesn't work.
  • Yes, I shoot fire 24/7. Zantac 150 2x daily and 2 tums before bed. This cocktail was prescribed by my OB.

  • I kinda made up my own cocktail and got my docs approval. I think the most important is the Protonix. Ask for that for sure. Zantac is a joke. He other parts of my cocktail take off the edge when needed. Last pregnancy I used Gavascon too. Seemed to help some. Good luck! It sucks to have acid reflux!
  • Avoid food and drinks that can worsen symptoms: caffeine, chocolate, citrus fruits, acidic foods, tomatoes and tomato sauce, greasy or fried food. I know, all the good stuff!

  • I had a friend who swore by apple cider vinegar.  Here's a few other natural ideas:

    https://www.babble.com/pregnancy/7-natural-remedies-for-pregnancy-heartburn/
  • I'm maxed out on Zantac. 150mg twice a day. I take tums in between. I got the go ahead from my doctor to continue with all that and add Prilosec to the mix. She said some women are just blessed with horrible heartburn.
  • I had it so bad first trimester I thought I was going to die... laying on my left side lessened the pain when it started (if I could lay down in that moment) and then on accident I found out that yogurt helped a tad as well as slowly eating ice cream... right when I was about the go for meds it went away on its own, now it's more of I just can't fit any food in my stomach, feels like there's so little room, like nothing goes down. I just have to eat suuuuuuper slow and that seems to keep it away. Basically sleep sitting up as well. (When I can actually sleep!!!) feel better! Hopefully your doc can find the right combo of pills or diet changes. I know that's a horrible feeling. Sorry :-(
