I'm probably going to get major flaming for this but oh well. We are actually using my nursery set (crib and dresser/changing table) from when I was a baby. My sister used it as well. We will be refinishing it and my dad has already changed the hardware for me so it is no longer drop side. The slats are within regulation width and it is extremely sturdy. It was a rather expensive investment my parents made, not just a cheapie set. My ILs wanted to buy us a new set as that's what they purchased for my SIL that just had a baby but based on our decision to use mine they will be using the same amount towards other things we need.
After doing the research and thoroughly inspecting the crib along with the modifications made it is a choice we feel very comfortable with. It does convert to a toddler bed as well as a full size but from what my mom has told me it's a real PITA. I've heard the new ones are as well from a few friends. So it will likely be the nursery set to all of our children and each will just get a new bed when they're ready for the transition.
Love that you are using your set! My mom didn't have mine, but the same person that made mine is now making them again, just calling them "classic cribs". So, my LO will have an exact replica of my crib from when I was a baby.
We just bought our nursery furniture at buybuybaby on New Year's Day. They were running a markdown on the set we loved and we had 20% off coupons. They let us use our bed bath and beyond coupons there too, which was pretty awesome. They said it will take 8-10 weeks to come in, so I am glad we ordered early. It is a convertible set which we are excited about.
Looks like I'm breaking tradition here, but I ordered a new convertible crib. We chose the Babyletto Hudson in white - should be here tomorrow. LOVE the design and compactness of this crib. Now... For bedding...
I'm looking into convertible cribs. Amazon seems to have better prices than BRU and even Target. The Graco Lauren 4 in 1 convertible crib had good review so that is the current front runner but I am still open to suggestions.
Personally I hate the look of convertible cribs. Well, specifically the ones with high ornate headboards for the back. We are going for a traditional, simple, standard crib. Probably something with straight lines in a fun color. Or a Jenny Lind style in a fun color.
Love the Jenny Linds in fun colors! Also, I hate the look of convertible cribs as well, and won't use mine as a bed - since it'll most likely go from one baby to the next. It was just a perk that comes with the crib, you should check it out! Very clean lined.
We have a crib that can be convertible but I never bought the extension kit. The crib is 100%organic made by nursery works. It was sold to us w a discount by a friend who ended up bed sharing and never used it.
DS's was pretty much the cheapest one at BRU. It's not a convertible and pretty simple looking, but I like it! We didn't even use it until 8 months because of bedsharing. We plan on using it for each baby if we can and then getting them a twin bed when upgrading.
@mrskblack11 and @pcrunk Thanks! I saw the cpsc.gov, but it was a little vague. The kidshealth.org was definitely a lot clearer! Definitely hoping we'll be able to use the one from when I was a baby! My twin sister and I shared it and my aunt used it with my twin cousins who will be 17 on Tuesday, so it's definitely very special
We just bought ours and DH could tell how excited I was so he put it up right away for me!!! Yippee It is convertible from crib toddler to full. I REALLY wanted white but I am using the bedroom set I had as a child and that DD used up until now...so we went with a finish that matches the rest of the bedroom set!!! Now for deciding on decor...for team green.
We'll be reusing the crib we bought for DS1 from Land of Nod. He chewed it sure (and I am relieved that I insisted on a crib made in the USA as a result!) but we own it. And we ended up with fleece/rail covers anyway, so the worst of the chewed parts will be covered.
It converts, but we already had my twin bed from childhood for DS to sleep in, so we didn't convert it. Maybe for DS2!
I just got an amazing deal on a convertible Simmons crib from Target...$149! And the matching dresser for $110! They also had a second model for $89 but of course every store in the area was out of stock.
My friend and I were just talking about this, she suggested a convertible, which we are going to go with, but said the one they picked had sides that were solid wood, rather than rails (because, of course, they liked the look better), but says her little one smacks her head on the solid wood ALL THE TIME. I guess just one of those things you can keep in the back of your mind when picking a crib out! Second, my parents sanded and restained the crib they used for us as kids, of course, it meets the safety recommendations, and it is nice for my parents to have at their house. My neice now uses it and our daughter/son will use it in the future, when they stay at Grandma and Grandpa's house!
@pcrunk We're using a hand-me-down too. Its drop-sided, and technically all of those are "banned", but its solid wood, very high quality, and in perfect condition. Between my dad being handy and my husband being an engineer - we'll find some way to jerry-rig it so the side is fixed. I just can't justify buying a new one (that won't be nearly as nice) when we have a perfectly good one sitting in our friends attic.
Pottery barn Kendell crib for us! Love how simple it is and they have a low profile option which is great for small spaces.

@pcrunk it all gets very silly and "mommy-wars"-ish. Someone will flame you for using a hand-me-down crib, and then buy one thats made in an anonymous factory in China and 2 years from now gets recalled for containing lead-based paint, or a cheapo from a big box store thats made with compressed wood (which is all sealed with formaldehyde), OR you do get one of those, and you get flamed for buying a shitty crib by someone who is going to turn their car seat around at 12 months, or lap-carry on a plane. There are 9389849875848574 things we can be all preachy about, but chances are every single one of us are going to violate one of those "rules" at some point in our parenting. You can't win unless you just ignore that stuff.
This is something I have to think about now that I didn't before. My mother offered us a crib that they bought ten years or so ago--never been used. But just recently she decided she wants to keep it. She looked at it and realised it's not my style after all, and she doesn't want baby to sleep in a pack n' play at their house but have a real crib. I expect baby will spend a lot of time over there so I don't mind at all, and I'm actually glad I can pick out my own the more I think about it. I can make sure it goes with everything else and not worry about it being old (although I am still going to make sure the one they have is regulation compliant, since my baby will still be using it).
It's not a big rush or anything, since we expect baby will sleep in our room for the first several months, but I've seen it recommended to have baby nap in his or her crib during the day to ease the transition and I'd like to do that if possible. I'm excited but overwhelmed!
I think convertible is the way to go. It'll last them till they move out if you want it to. I found a style I really liked on Target.com and the same one at Babysrus.com it's from the DaVinci line then one we got was Kalani. We bought it off Amazon brand new for like $220 and it came with the conversion kit. When you think about the life span of that bed....totally worth it!

That does sound like a good deal. I'm torn though--I feel like since we plan on having more kids, having a crib just be a crib and buying beds when needed will be fine. Otherwise, would I have to get a new convertible crib for each baby? Then again, regulations do change--so much to think about. @-)
I bought mine yesterday! It's the first thing we have bought so far. We were out randomly shopping for lamps and just happened to walk past Mammas & Pappas which were having an incredible sale on nursery furniture - ending at 6pm, so we went for it! It converts into a gorgeous sleigh bed x
We got a great deal on our convertible crib through Kmart(I know shocker there are still a few around) my friend got it for her son and loves it. My parents had offered the one that me and my 3 siblings had slept in which also my three nephews had slept in as we ll but at the same time it's 30 years old and we would like to start with something newer.
We went with an ikea hensvik crib. Love it. We will be side car-ing it to our bedframe, as we are bed sharing/co sleeping. Also went with their matress.
End of January, a lot of baby stores have a lot of sales allegedly. We got ours from a friend who had twins and two of everything but only ended up using one crib. We got the crib, mattress and a lot of bedding for $90 which is a total steal! My sister who is 6 weeks ahead of me got the same one for much more. It's a Graco 3 in 1 that converts to toddler bed-however we plan and hope to have 2 pretty close so we will probably end up buying another toddler bed anyway.
@pcrunk - Personally, I think furniture made back in the day is so much better than the crap they sell today. Most of my furniture is hand me downs and second/third/forth hand; I love making it my own. As long as the crib is safe and there is no lead in the paint, I'm with you. Unfortunately, I have to get a new crib.
@lookingfor2583 I love Jenny Lind for so many reasons. I had one for my DD 10 years ago and let someone use it but it never found its way home. I'm thinking yellow. Love it! It is a convertible, however, I will most likely not use it as anything but a crib. Moving to a "big kid" bed is a big deal to some kids and a new bed makes it exciting to sleep in. On the other hand, some kids prefer the familiarity of their crib so the convertible part works well. You will only know what is right for them when that time comes.
@tinybugsmom We're going with an ikea crib too! Just can't stomach paying $400 for a crib that may get destroyed and look like junk pretty quickly. And at their prices it's no big deal to have to go out and buy a twin bed when necessary.

I did lots of reading, and loved that they have to meet all safety standards for any country they sell in.... Germany has much tougher safety standards than the US.... and the cribs are sold there. Their mattresses are also good, much less off gassing than others since other countries don't allow what the US deems ok.....
We're using a hand me down as well. It's a drop side, but H has secured it so it doesn't move. It's not a convertible, but I don't like that style anyway. When it's time for the big kid bed, we just go straight to a twin.
We're looking at a Graco convertible. I found it on the BRU website initially but found it cheaper on Amazon. DH isn't ready to start buying things yet but he's agreed to furniture? The one we chose is super simple and I liked the way the back would look as and headboard later.
