Elecare and MSPI reactions??

Have any of you had any experience using Elecare for MSPI? We just started our little guy on it 3 nights ago and have since noticed a rash (after it took us forever to clear it up!) and a return of mucus/blood in his diaper. I plan on calling the ped allergist ASAP in the morning as he is the one who prescribed it. I'm just curious, is it possible for a baby to be allergic to such a hypoallergenic formula???

Also, the formula is just a last resort supplement as I'm still breast feeding. Due to a medical issue my supply has dwindled and I'm working my butt off trying to get it back up

Technically a person can have an allergy to pretty much anything.

There's no reason to say that formula is "just a last resort" - probably not the best way to try to make friends here, or any forum. There is nothing wrong with feeding your baby, and no one is going to shame you for using formula.  Many of us formula feed and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

  • I'm sorry, I never meant to offend! I believe everyone has their right to do what is best for them and their baby. And I agree, formula feeding is just as good in my opinion. I'm just trying very hard to keep breastfeeding and it's been a long struggle, so for me personally (after exhausting my freezer supply and trying everything under the sun) formula is what we would consider a last resort. I certainly apologize if it came off wrong!

We are pulling our hair out just trying to get our baby healthy
  • Are you able to breastfeed during the night while you wait until you can contact the pedi allergist?

Have you seen an IBCLC for your supply issue? :)

  • Yes, I can nurse him tonight but I'm afraid he's going to still be hungry. It'll break my heart if I have to hear him scream in hunger! I've actually talked to two different LC's at our hospital and I'm doing everything they suggested. My supply is better than it was thank goodness but nowhere near enough to exclusively bf!
  • Rule number one is feed the baby. :) So I wouldn't suggest withholding food from him!!

In addition to Amy's suggestions, Human Milk for Human Babies is a great source of direct milk-sharing. Donor milk may work very well for your LO while you work on increasing your supply.

Do you mind my asking what the medical condition is that makes your supply low and what you're doing to help increase it? Just to see if I have any additional thoughts or ideas for you.

  • AmyG, thank you for the wonderful information! I have to wonder if it's not the soy oil causing the problem then. It was my understanding that it was soy proteins that were the issue, not the oils. I wonder why the allergist didn't mention the soy oil? Hmm...
I have been eating corn regularly in my diet and we hadn't had a breakout of rash/blood in the diaper for a little bit since going dairy/soy free until we started the Elecare, so I'm not thinking it would be corn (but then again you never know I suppose! Corn wasn't tested)
I will definately check out the food allergy board and the donor milk organization. I've never heard of donor milk before! Thank you again for your helpful response
