stupid question: registering?

FTM here. I was wondering do you register if you aren't having a baby shower? I have no friends/family where I live, so I can imagine having a baby shower. Of course I would love some help with buying baby stuff ( since I am not sure how I am going to afford it all!!). But other reasons might you register besides a baby shower, if any? Thanks.

  • I'm a FTM too, but like pp said, go ahead and register because you get discounts and it's a great way to keep track of what you need/have - I still use my wedding registries when I'm making Christmas and birthday lists. If you've got family and friends elsewhere that will be sending you gifts, it's also an easy way for them to find out what you need and send it to you if the registries are online (which they pretty much all are now).

  • Totally still make a registry!! If anything, it can be a very helpful checklist of what you need/have/still need to get. And friends and family may still ask if you've registered if they want to send you a gift.

  • Friends and family will still likely want to give a gift, even with no official shower. I once threw a distance baby shower because it was clear nobody was going to be able to travel overseas for my SIL's, and it worked. Definitely register!

  • Keep in mind that baby's don't actually *need* everything you tend to think they do. Ad a TTM I noticed that I used far less "baby gear" with my second. A place to sleep something to eat and diapers is all they need for quite some time. Don't worry about getting everyrhing right away. With that being said yes absoutely make a registry! We saved about 30% completing our BRU registry by opening a credit card at the same time.

  • Comb your local Craigslist for things like a play mat and swing and an ergo. You can usually get great, gently used ones for cheap. I bought three play tables on craigslist for 15 bucks total for DD (2 went to daycare). I don't recommend buying a car seat or anything re: safety off of CL though. Good luck'

How did you have a distance baby shower?
  • I did it twice, actually. The first one was in the US; I came up with the guest list with both her mom and her MIL, mailed everyone an 8x8 blank page of a scrapbook with a letter of the alphabet on it and instructions to create the page for the baby that would be compiled into a customized alphabet book. (I also included self-addressed return envelopes with postage to make it super easy). Gift-wise, we just used word of mouth to suggest people ship the gifts to her brother's house (he lived nearby, she had just moved with her DH) so they'd be a surprise, and then I basically packed a party in my suitcase, her mom and I arranged a cake and food there, and we threw her a surprise one with just me, her brother, and her mom and dad, and a few guests appeared via Skype throughout the party.

For SIL, I did the alphabet book again since it worked so well the first time and offered to ship any (small) gifts for the "guests." I figured since I didn't have the cost of food/drink in hosting a shower, I could pay for the shipping. One of the boxes I sent was purely a party box - I decorated the inside, put baby confetti over everything, and had corny things like the mom-to-be sash, chocolates, etc. Not exactly a baby shower in a box but I tried. Then MIL and I skyped with her while she opened everything and tried to make it a fun time.

  • @LadySif I think that's very sweet of you to go to the trouble to make people feel loved even if they couldn't have a traditional baby shower.

@thursdaychick It is a daunting proposition but I agree with PPs, it is definitely possible! In addition to completion discounts from registries and thrifty shopping strategies, I highly recommend lucieslist.com. It narrows down what you really need and offers recommendations in different price ranges.
