Blood in milk and pain...

I will try to make this short and to the point but have a lot to include, so bear with me. I have had a cracked nipple since LO was born (now 10 weeks old) and had to use apno but it's still not healed completely. I nurse her anyways and it's not to bothersome. I've been sick the last week and went to the doc, he gave me amoxicillin...so I've been taking that and a probiotic. Now I am having pain in my one breast (with the cracked nipple) and when I pumped that side tonight the milk was filled with blood. Eeekkkkk it looks so gross! What the heck is going on?!?

Re: Blood in milk and pain...

  • The blood could be just from having your pump on too high of a setting. You can still use the milk. Ive found if it is in the fridge a couple days, the blood will settle to the bottom. Then you can pour it into another bottle to reduce the amount of blood. This isnt necessary, but may make you feel better. You shouldn't have a crack for 10 weeks, though. Can you try nursing in different positions so your LOs mouth is on your breast at different angles? Also, when I had a really bad crack right in the center of my nipple, I just put a bottle top over my nipple inside my nursing bra when at home. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I really think having nothing touching the nipple for a few hour break here and there helped it heal.

  • @theresat858‌ I am thinking that is what the bleeding is from. I am still having sporadic pain though and it's more inside the breast than the nipple.
    @surpriseaddition‌ thanks for the idea.
  • If you are having pain inside the breast, it could potentially be thrush (yeast) since you were on antibiotics. Does LO have any white spots in the mouth? But usually your nipple is affected. That may be hard to tell with the crack, though.

  • @surpriseaddition‌ LO mouth shows no signs of thrush.
    I am thinking it's this nipple still causing all this trouble.
