Inconsolable teether

There have been a couple nights recently where LO is inconsolably crying and screaming before bed. I am attributing this largely to teething because through the day he's always chewing on something. I give him Tylenol and have used the smallest amount of baby orajel natural (I've heard bad side effects so the orajel is last ditch effort) to help but it only seems to help a little. He ends up crying himself out while I hold and rock him for about 45 minutes. Any suggestions as to anything else that can soothe him when he's to tired to hold something to chew?

Re: Inconsolable teether

  • Could it be something else, maybe in addition to teething? I noticed LO was doing this so I moved her bedtime up 30 minutes, sometimes more. It solved the problem for the most part.

  • I don't think so, we're pretty consistently putting him to bed by 7, 730 at the latest. Almost every night he seems happy and content with it
  • Have you tried a cold teether. I dont know the exact name, sorry. My DD was like this one day so I grabbed a teether out of the freezer and held it while she chewed on it. She stayed calm while it was in her mouth and after a while she finally went to sleep.
  • Try hyland teething tablets. I give LO 2-3 before bed and it seems to really help. What side effects have you heard for oragel? I use that sometimes but not often. @Mrsthompsontobe‌
  • @blondee4685‌ the original kind (not the naturals kind) can cause a reaction that babies stop breathing and also can numb the back of their throat to the point they don't swallow their spit and choke. It's rare of course it scared the crap out of me :/
  • We're in the same boat so happy to be reading this thread. I am going to try the Hyland's tablets (ordered them just now) but tonight will try Tylenol. We got no sleep last night - he was up almost on the hour, every hour, not hungry but just screaming and crying inconsolably.

  • @FrodaBaggins‌ I'm sorry to hear you're going through the same thing. I'm glad to know I'm not alone though
  • My LO has been showing signs of teething since 3 months. The hyland tablets have been working great and randomly some oragel but last night he was a mess. My husband had him all day while I was at work and he said he was a mess and barely napped :( so I just gave him Tylenol for the first time (for teething), hoping he gets some rest.
  • TUMMY CALM!
Oh my goodness. Tummy calm is the best thing I've discovered in a long time. I had many sleepless nights and long cry-full days :(
A friend told me about tummy calm and lo has been so much happier ever since. What sucks is that Walgreens is the only store that sells it :( unless you buy it online and it's a little pricey.
  • I am so glad to read I am not the only one!  Was up all night last night with LO, H had to get up for work at 4am so couldn't really wake him up to help.  He was screaming unless I was holding and rocking him, chewing on his bottle nipples, his pacifier, even the natural baby orajel didn't help!  Going to try the hyland teething tabs when I get to the store, maybe some infant Tylenol tonight.

Get's much worse I'm breaking out the whiskey, lol.

Am I a terrible mom that at 4am I actually considered the whiskey a legitimate option?

I don't think so. It's what mom's used to do before teething rings and oragel and Amber necklaces. I don't think a little rubbed on the gums once is going to do any harm.

I didn't use it but I was so tempted
  • I feel like this is a stupid question, but I need some advice and don't want to start a new thread! I can't tell if my child is teething or not and if that is the cause for not sleeping. He is a pretty chill baby, he rarely cries and doesn't get too fussy normally (knock on wood). Thanksgiving night was the first time he slept 6+ hours at a time and after that he would have a few good nights and a few bad nights so I figured we were headed in the right direction. Well we were planning on transitioning to the crib (he is still in our room) and then he just stopped sleeping more than a few hours at a time.

I will put him to sleep and after 3-4 hours he wakes himself up just tossing and turning and sometimes sucking on his hand. So I feed him and put him back to sleep and after that first inital wake up he will sleep 45 minutes - 2 hours and then wake up again. At first I thought teething but then my cousin said it is the 4 month sleep regression which I didn't know was a real thing. I feel like a bad mom because I can't tell what is the issue. He doesn't like the cold teething rings and is whatever about Sophie but always has his hands in his mouth and occasionally likes to gnaw on our fingers. I feel like he is teething to an extent but I don't know what is the cause of the sleep issues. Please help :)

  • @vk2204‌ it could be a combination of both. LO is 5 1/2 months and we're still dealing with the regression and now teething to top it off. I know the teething is our big issue right now because I can see and feel the bottom 2, his cries are not just fussy ones they are ones of pain. Other big signs are lots of drool, fever, pink cheeks, pulling at his or her ears. Good luck! It's hard but others have assured me there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This is what signaled to us LO's teething... he is chomping down hard on everything. Also the drool has increased exponentially and he has the rosiest cheeks.

  • @mrsthompsontobe @herecomesthesun

I forgot about rosy cheeks being a sign! I was thinking to myself yesterday, this kid looks like he is wearing a lot of rouge lol. My lack of sleep brain did not put 2 and 2 together. I am going to try those tablets and I hope they help a little. Thanks!
