severe back pain

I've experienced debilitating back pain that I found temporary relief with months of physical therapy. Of course, I have to get in with my primary first before I can start back up. It's the lower back/sciatic pain that literally prevents me from even walking. Any suggestions that worked for you until I can get back to physical therapy, because my exercises are not working?

Re: severe back pain

  • I make sure to sit with my legs propped up as much as possible and I'm seeing a chiro every 2-3 weeks. You may try a massage, but they can't go too deep since you're pregnant. I also use biofreeze which my OB said was ok to use while pregnant and an ice pack.

If propping up your legs doesn' work, you may want to try laying on your left side to relieve the pain on your sciatic.

  • Heating pad and/or wraps with the occasional tylenol. When it gets really bad a pillow under my legs right around the knees. TENs units also work well if you get any bad muscle spasms. As others suggested, chiropractors are amazing as are some yoga stretches.

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

  • Thanks ladies. I'll try some of these
  • I'm having the same issue. I had a break through when I alternated hot and cold on my back/hamstring area changing every 20 minutes. My pt said it creates a pump. It was so sore the next day but then I felt better. I'm also doing pt and chiro plus massage. I still don't have feeling in my right foot and some of my leg but my pain is better.
  • Piraformis stretching and chiropractic adjustments!
  • I have a cracking/crunching sharp low back pain that seems to fire up after sitting for too long, standing, bending over a lot. It seems to be getting worse. I asked my OB last week and what she described was exactly what I am experiencing. Apparently it's the sacrum getting too loose from hormone and slipping out of place. She suggested moving (getting up/changing position) very slowly. There are butt exercises to help strengthen the ligaments, but she did say NOT to over stretch as this will only loosen already wiggly joints.
