Am i worrying to much?

So my daughter just turned 8 months old today, she smiles all the time, answers to her name about 60% of the time, and mimics some sounds we do. But she has yet to have a full on belly laugh. She giggles sometimes, but I have to work hard to get giggles. Sometimes she won't even giggle unless I bounce her, or something like that. I'm getting discouraged. And then I read that she should start using consonants? She is still only ooohing and ahhing. A few shrieks and grunts here and there. I'm a FTM so I don't know if I need to be concerned or what? Any input would be so helpful!

  • LO is like this also. We can get him to laugh sometimes but we have to work so hard for it. My older son used to laugh so easily, so this was totally different to me. Honestly, this baby is just more serious and he likes to take things in more and really evaluate as opposed to just thinking everything is hilarious. I would say not to worry. I definitely was concerned at first but I just think his personality is different. His older brother is basically the only one who can make him laugh.

As far as the whole consonants thing....yeah, none of that here. I try to talk to him and I say things like "mamamama" or "babababa" and most of the time he looks at me like he is infatuated but doesn't try to do it himself. Babies are special creatures and they don't necessarily pay attention to the milestones we have set for them in our minds.

I will say, it never hurts to ask your pedi about any of your concerns, so don't hesitate to check on things with them.

  • This is my third child, and the variation is crazy. My middle son didn't crawl until 9 months, didn't utter any words until after his first birthday, and even by his second birthday, was only a little conversational. Now at 10, he's the most talkative, articulate, and eloquent child ever.

My oldest had full on three word sentences by 11 months. (I love you, look at that, etc).

This LO is honestly growing so fast in such a busy household that I have no idea what milestones he has and hasn't hit.

Don't fret. All babies are different. If you're concerned, check CDC and ask the pedi to ease your mind. :)

DD was never a big laugher.  DS on the other hand is always smiling and laughing.  It's crazy the difference from one kid to another!

With talking, all I get from this one is drunken babbling, mumbling, and spitting.  DD was kind of a late talker, but she's quite the talker now and getting better everyday.  Both kids have been quick to move around though, and I don't know if it's true or just bs but I've heard some people say some kids tend to focus on language or movement.

Like PPs said, there are such variations in each kid.  But, it can't hurt to mention it to the pedi at your next checkup!

  • PPs pretty much covered it but just want to say that I'm in the same boat. My little guy does lots of "eeeeh eehhh ehhh" but no consonants yet. The constant whining is so much fun, haha! I'm hoping that he'll start babbling more soon. I will bring it up at his 9 month appt if he hasn't by then.
  • Well I definitely feel a bit better! I'm gonna work with her on the talking and try to find what she finds funny! :)
  • I've brought it up to her pedi (the laughing) and she wasn't worried.
  • Our daughter is 8mos next week and has only laughed once. She smiles all the time but no giggles. I was planning to ask at her 9mo appt but from what u read since she is hitting everything else not a big deal. Good luck, I know it's hard not to worry.

  • I'm wondering if she's just focusing on her other skills, like crawling, standing, eating. That she's not trying hard at her verbal skills ?
  • I find language is the last thing for ds on his developmental priorities.

I have yet to hear a full on babble. I've heard a couple mama or baba but that's it.

Your worrying is understandable, I'm with you there. I plan on asking asking the 9 mos appointment if it hasn't popped up yet.
