2nd Trimester

a "sitting high" baby?

Today I went to the hospital for lower stomach and back pains, I had a really really horrible uti which had gotten do bad the infection was causing my bladder to have painful "spasms". They checked for the babys heartbeat, which was good, but I'm just at 13 weeks and she found the heartbeat really high up, like it was nearly to my belly button. My question is, why was it so high up? They told me my uterus was just now getting over my pelvis and my bladder and stuff, but I'm pretty sure my pelvis doesn't go up that far? Is it just the way it was laying or something? I'm not showing yet at all. This is my second child. I'm just curious if it was just way up or if anyone else had had it be up so far like that? When I was this far with my first they had to practically dig in my belly to find the heartbeat, and I know every pregnancy is different. My blood work and everything came back normal where it should of been. so I'm just wondering if it could of been all streched out or laying funny or if anyone else has had there baby be high up like that at or around 13 weeks?

  • If you have a short torso it is possible for the baby to be that high up at 13 weeks. Because it would really have nowhere else to go. Additionally with second+ pregnancies there is a combination of muscle memory and weakened abs that cause the growth to seem to happen faster. If the doctor isn't worried I wouldn't be worried.

Was this with a Doppler? Was it angled downward? My (uneducated) guess is just that it was an angling/sound transmission thing more so than that the baby was up there. If it was ultrasound, my very vague (again, uneducated) understanding is that the heartbeat sound is sometimes simulated based on the picture of the moving heart rather than actually picking up the sound, so if the probe could get an image--even from a weird angle--why move it?
