Best sleeping arrangement for twins that will be in our bedroom

Ok so long story but we can't afford the house we live in without roommates, so there is no spare bedroom for a nursery. The babies will be in our bedroom for at least 6 months at which point our lease will be up and we will consider moving. I am trying to figure out what the most space saving way will be while also making sure they are going to be safe and able to sleep comfortably..Is this one of those things I just have to wait and see how it goes? My sister is giving me a pack and play and if we put some of our bedroom furniture in the shed it could probably fit in our bedroom. I also have been given one rock-a-roo (similar to rocknplay) and am wondering if maybe I should get something similar to that and each sleep in their own? Space is seriously limited I am getting stressed just writing this.

  • I would suggest sharing a pack and play. I don't think it's a good idea to have them sleep in a rock and play long-term.

  • thanks for the response. What in your opinion is bad about it? I thought the main thing was that you didn't want it to be rocking them the whole time, so I planned to not use the rocking motion much. Is it the way they lie in it?

Another possible idea is to sidecar the crib and have them both sleep in that.

Mine slept in the rock n play until 6 months. We loved it. They didnt take up much space and were very portable. They only have a vibrate feature. Despite what the name implies they do Rock not unless you do it manually. We transitioned them to their ctribs at 6 mo when they started to be able to sit up in them.

  • We have space and nursery for the girls but plan to have them in our bedroom for the first few months anyways. After lots of thinking and talking to other twin moms, we decided on 1 pack and play for the girls to sleep in at first. It was between crib, two cribs, by-your-side sleepers, bassinets or pack n play. The pack n play won due to recommendations. The pack n play we bought has a removable diaper changer.

My twins slept in a single pack n play in our room using the newborn station until they were 4 months old...we then moved them into a single crib...and a month or so later separate cribs. The pack n play worked great, but using the newborn station we hit the weight limit for that at 4 months, but my son is a chunky monkey....had both babies been the size of my daughter we could have lasted longer.

  • My twins slept together in a pack in play in my room till about 6/7 months before I moved them into their own room. It is do-able. Good Luck!
  • Sounds like the pack n play will be the best option. Guess I need to get my fiance's butt in gear in a couple months and move some furniture.

  • We had the twin pack and play that has the two bassinets so each baby has their own space. It is a little bigger than a regular pack and play but I loved it. It was right by our bed for the first 4 months or so.

  • We used rock n plays. One baby had reflux and couldn't sleep flat. Plus they were super compact - can't beat it. When the babies were born we lived in a very small space and needed to maximize as much as possible.

I had my girls sharing a pack n play in our room at first. However even with them being small, they would wiggle into each other and between that and reading stories of crib sharing twins suffocating DH and I moved them to their own cribs last week. I sleep much better knowing they're in a safer sleeping situation.
ETA: you can get mini pack and plays too that are much smaller than the original and still safe for babies.
I've read that rock n plays are not considered a safe sleep environment, though I know many moms use them. It has to do with the close in sides and the fact that it's at an angle-both factors make it less safe
  • Ok FTM to be here and I'm completely clueless. But with the pack n plays are you having them sleep up top? Do you add anything to it? I was looking at the ideal co-sleeper and considering that. I would like to keep my twins with us for the first 4-5 months before putting them in their cribs.

I never liked the top / bassinet feature. We only use PNPs when we travel and they've always slept in the bottom.

We have our twins in our rooms sleeping in little loungers. They are the graco version of a rnp. They have a more adjustable bottoms though and can range anywhere between almost completely flat and pretty inclined which has been great with my daughters reflux.
I am thinking of those for my twins when they arrive.

  • We have the same problem and we made the crib a side car to our bed. They're 2 months now and we plan to do this till six months and re-evaluate then because we will be moving as well. We tried the rock and plays and that didn't really work out we only use them sometimes in the day when they nap and are willing to be put down which isn't often for one twin :/

I am stuck in the stupid quote box but anyways would you say the crib sidecar is working well for you?

I think this has already been said, but my twins slept in the top part of a pack and play until they were about 3-4 months old, and they napped in the rock and plays.  Once they were 3-4 months, I started trying to get them to nap in their separate cribs (they did have a nursery; we just did not use it much for the first few months), and when they started waking each other up more in the same space and felt too heavy for the PNP, they slept in separate rock and plays from months 4-5.  Then they moved into their nursery fulltime.  I think the reason you don't want babies to get dependent on a rock and play is because they sleep on an incline kind of wedged in it, so transitioning to flat on their back without the sides around them would be difficult.  With mine, they slept on flat surfaces in the PNP more often than not, so it was a non-issue.
