Any swimmers out there?

I am trying to get back into the water to swim laps as I am starting to get bigger and running is getting a little more difficult.  I was a swimmer throughout my childhood into high school and college, but have taken a few years off.  It was difficult for me to squeeze into my old swim suits as it is, but now that I have a growing belly, it is impossible.  Anybody have any suggestions on what to swim in, or where to get a relatively inexpensive maternity type swim suit?  Thanks in advance!

Re: Any swimmers out there?

  • Target has maternity suits that are usu under $30. It won't be the speedo quality/fit you are used to, but it should grt the job done.

Also, I'm jealous that you enjoy swimming as a form of exercise. I've tried a number of times (on rec from phys therapist) and just can't stick with it.

  • I love swimming too!  I have been trying to still squeeze into my old speedo, but in the next week or two, I anticipate needing a new suit as well.  I was planning to check out Target to see what they have in stock.

  • I'm also a former swimmer getting back into it. My doc recommended it because it's low/no impact exercise. I have some old, very loose and worn out training suits, I doubled them up for drag back in the good old days, they are working well for now and I anticipate being able to wear them for quite some time. Although, who knows how big I'll get. DH suggests I wear my swim shorts and a sports bikini top if I get too big, I think he likes the bump :)
  • I'm a triathlete, so I swim seasonally... I'll probably get back into it in the spring when running gets uncomfortable. It really is a great workout! I just don't have the tolerance for it in the winter (something about getting into a cold pool, even though it's indoors, just seems terribly unappealing)

I have a 2-piece suit that I train in, so hopefully it won't look too grotesque when I'm in 3rd tri! If people have an issue, I say they can suck it. :P

  • I am a swimmer.  Just got back from the pool.  I swim for an adult swim team/Master's club.  No need for a maternity swimsuit.  Go to Speedo and find one in a bigger size (swims a little on you).  A bathing suit should be a little smug but will give in the belly.  Swimming is a great exercise but if you are looking for "actual keep you in shape", you need to properly swim.  Doing 10 laps of head up breaststroke is a great way to kill time but isn't really going to do anything for you.  2 pieces are good option.  Let me know if you have any questions.  I'm slowly readjusting myself back into swimming after a break for the 1st trimester.  The biggest thing I have noticed is that my balance is slightly off which affects my coordination in the pool.
  • I love to swim but have no regular access to a pool. You might have some luck at swimsuits4all.com. Their clearance prices are pretty good.

  • Thanks for the feedback!! I think I am just going to up my speedo size by one and see how that goes. I wish I had a bunch of drag suits left, but I tossed all mine once I gave up competitive swimming... after 15 years of racing, I always thought the last place I'd find myself would be back in the pool, but honestly, stopping might be my one regret... it certainly kept me in shape... these days, it's hard to believe I used to spend 2 to 4 hours a day in the water; it is way more difficult than I remember!! It's also nice to connect with some current and former swimmers!! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancies!!
  • is it sad that I read the description for this post and immediately though you were asking about sperm...oy!

  • I swam with a group almost every day of my last pregnancy and I really think it helped my core and stomach return to closer to normal after birth.  I'm not doing it much right now but hoping to stick with 2-3 days a week. The maternity suits out their aren't great for lap swimming and won't hold up to chlorine for frequent swimmers.  I was able to wear my normal suit until about 24 weeks but it would feel tight dry but fine in the water.  Then I sized up one size and that took me to about 36 weeks.  Then switched to a sports bra and a pair or triathlon shorts.  I didn't want to expose the bump but for lap swimming I didn't feel like I had a choice.  I'll probably do the same this time.  I know Aquapshere makes maternity suits for swimmers, it seems to expensive to do for just  few weeks. Though in the end it was 6 weeks in the sports bra as I swam to 42 weeks (don't even want to think about that this time around).

  • Former competitive swimmer here. I am just sizing up as others have suggested. I'll be curious to see how long I can do flip turns for. I can already tell my center of gravity is different! Any sets you want to share? Mine are boring and would like some variety. 200 free, 100 kick free, 100 kick breast, 3x400 alt 50 free, 50 back, 50 free, 50 breast, 200 kick, 200 cool down.
