DS hates the right boob

For a couple of weeks now, I can't get DS to stay on the right side for more than 3 minutes, and he's pretty much only eating from the left. I still offer the right every feeding, if only to stimulate production on that side, but he fusses after mere moments.

I have no pain, no tenderness, nothing that feels like a clogged duct that would make it hard for him to nurse there. When i pump, I only manage to get about 1.5 ounces out of the right (on the left I can get 2.5 to 3 ounces).

Does this happen to anyone else? I'm worried the left alone can't keep up with his demand for milk, but he hates my right boobie!

Re: DS hates the right boob

  • I've had this with each girl (I'm on number 3).  Interestingly, the first only liked the right and the other two only like the left.  One boob can fully support your baby, but you'll look funny :D.  Several things can cause this.  It can be the force of your let down on that side.  It can be the speed of flow on that side.  It can be that your baby is a bit stiff muscular wise on one side.  I'm sure there are other things too.

  • My LO has always preferred my left side. My right side has never produced as much as my left and I think the let down is slower. She does better when she has the left side first then eats from the right. I still offer the right side first every other time though.

  • DD has preferred the right boob since day 1. My left is so deflated in comparison.

  • I had this problem for a few weeks and now he's back to both. I always pumped the side he wouldn't eat from.
  • thanks for the feedback everyone!  Muscle pain/stiffness hadn't occurred to me. I tried sitting him up differently to nurse from the right and that earned it an extra 5 minutes or so, so we'll see! Nice to know I can just continue on the left if all else fails.

  • OP.... Your exact scenario here. I have a history of mastitis and also MRSA in the left boob and LO always has preferred the right. When I pump I get that same amount out of each side just reversed right vs. Left. I saw my OB and she said the same thing happened to her and just have LO continue to nurse from both. I tried fenugreek but that didn't help (took it in appropriate doses too). Left side has slower let down, so I just have a super right boob.
  • I had this but it was completely chiropractic for the baby! I told my chiropractor and he did something, now she says both sides fine. But I've been pushing righty to build spiky
