My dog and my pregnancy

I am currently 1 day away from 18 weeks but since about 16 weeks I have noticed that my cat and my bigger dog have been very clingy to me. My big dog especially! She follows me everywhere more than normal and is constantly at my feet. Even if I'm randomly standing in the middle of the room she lays at my feet then waits to see where I go next. Anyone else experience this? Even my horses act more cautious around me and constantly wanting to touch my belly with their noses haha ☺

Re: My dog and my pregnancy

  • Yep, my cats are definitely aware of my pregnancy. There was a post about this pretty early on, so I would suggest doing a search for pets to see if you can find it.

  • My dogs won't leave me alone! I love them to pieces... but they're driving me nuts at night because they refuse to stay off our bed at night- they're both around 60-65lbs. My greyhound knew I was pregnant before I did while my pit mix took til about 10 weeks to catch on. They like to rest their heads on my belly and seem to feel like their new job is to watch me- especially as I'm trying to sleep. Its endearing and annoying at the same time :)
  • @bluedaisy2001‌ ... I have noticed Kahlua (my big dog) has started to bark more often where she has never really done so before all this and she sits at the front door watching the road more too than normal. Otis my little dog dsnt count bc he has always barked even when the wind blows the wrong way which we live in West Texas so you can imagine my pain haha
  • Our dog knew very early on, he is much clinger than usual and often rests his head on my belly. It's really cute. I read that they can smell the changes happening in your body!
  • My Sophie baby( mini poodle) loves to sleep cuddled up with me. Shes even nicer to my SO.
  • My pup started checking in on me while I'm on the shower a couple weeks ago. Kinda creepy. She also won't stay offs the bed and slowly creeps up and tries to steal my pillow.

  • I am not a pet person but these stories are so adorable. I love it when animals can sense things humans cannot. Especially when they become protective. DH gained more points through you ladies for getting a puppy.

  • We have noticed the same thing!  Our 1 1.5 year old Aussiedoodle who is generally a huge snob, no one can pet him or cuddle with, has taken a huge liking to me!  He cuddles on the couch with me.  When they go outside, he stays by the window to watch me.  And once in awhile he sniffs my belly when I lay down.  I think its awesome!! I can't wait for him to interact with the baby!
  • I have two miniature wiener dogs and my black and tan (Frank) knew before me :) He follows me everywhere and is always sleeping next to me with his head on or near my belly if I'm on the couch. The dogs are not allowed in our bed, but Frank doesn't leave my side so if I'm in bed, he's next to it :) My red (Laney) doxie is aware I think, but she's not very protective, so she's not as bad as Frank. However, when we brought our first son home from the hospital, both dogs were VERY aware of where he was at all times and if he was fussing in his crib, they'd both come get me even before I could hear him. Even now, even if he's just laying in his bed awake (he's 4), the dogs are scratching at his door to tell me he's up lol. LOVE their intuition and love for our family!
  • My dog started acting different from two weeks before I even found out I was pregnant. He went through a more anxious/protective phase, and is still protective but very affectionate.

He followed me to the bathroom to lay his head on my feet while I was brushing my teeth yesterday.

Our pit ,Maya, knew before i ever suspected it. Shes a huge, muscular girl dog and has always been really attached to me. But now, more then ever, she stays by my side (I can't even pee by myself anymore). She wines at me when she can't lay beside me and cuddles her sweet face in my belly when she can. That, she never used to do. When i make a sudden noise she freaks out and runs to check on me sniffing my belly first. We aready have a six yr old girl who Maya is very protective over. She tries to do everything that my daughter does and be in the middle. Dogs are very instinctive creatures and very smart as well. I have no doubt whatsoever that she knows exactly what is going on. I also know that our sweet fury one will be a wonderful big sister!!!
  • The stray we took in a few months ago, she used to just run and jump on me...always landing on my stomach. A few weeks back she stopped jumping on me and climbs up very slowly. She also avoids stepping on my stomach and she just lays next to me :) the new puppy (10 weeks old) has no clue. My 13 year old Chihuahua is just as clingy as always :)
  • My cats are assholes if they know anything. As soon as I lay down they come to lay down and stomp on my belly haha. I don't let that go on for long and they get comfortable on my legs. My dog has been very sweet but she's always sweet and a good dog so maybe they know but maybe they don't. This will be their first baby

  • This is our first pregnancy also, so I had heard stories about animals being weird and was looking for strange behavior. Turns out, I didn't have to look so hard. Big dog sleeps with his head just above where my bump starts and little dog can't seem to stop licking my stomach. We get into bed and he immediately gets into shirt-licking mode.
Our cat is more snuggle friendly, but she's always been easy going. She's been sleeping in the 'nursery' (aka empty room) which makes me smile.
  • I really think my cats know---they are always all over me. And we had one cat that never cuddled and always ran from us...and since I been pregnant she jumps on my lap all the time and wants lovins. She still runs from my husband! LOL. I hope she doesn't lose intrest again after I have baby.
  • I guess my little shi zhu poodle mix is a bit of a diva...shes spoiled rotten and still behaves as though everyone is here for her comfort and entertainment. And as small as herb9 lb ass is she can manage to hog a king size bed...same as always...also tries to jump on my lap while on the toilet and expects regular belly rubs and back rubs..ugh..lol
  • My dogs started acting werid too. Im 18 weeks and my one dog is very attached to me while my other dog( my first dog that I spoiled and is my baby) is acting out. He jumped on my table tonight and ate my dinner and hes been going on furniture when they arent allowed.
  • I can't get enough of the pet threads to be honest! My little Shih tzu is such a diva, She sits beside the bath while I'm in it and doesn't leave my side! I'm so in love with her
  • It's certainly not very easy to surf the web when I have two kitties sitting on me when I'm on the couch!

  • We have a miniature dachshund who turned 1 in August and he hasn't acted any different, but my in laws miniature dachshund who is 9 has acted different since the day we told them we were expecting. This afternoon I was over there and he jumped up on the couch and was nuzzling my belly. He's normally a grumpy old man so it's really funny
  • My two beagle mixes definitely know. The older one is more clingy than ever and is very jealous of his doggie brother being near me also. The younger one is very protective of me out on our walks now. he's even going after joggers and walkers if I'm walking them alone. When my husband is there, he is back to normal. The defensiveness is flattering but also embarrassing and not very nice behavior.

Both dogs want to be on my belly ALL the time. They know its the most valuable piece of real estate in the world right now. Can't wait for them to meet their little human brother. :x
  • I have an indoor dog and cat that I adore, but they have been clueless so far, acting no different than usual and I'm at 15 wk w/ twins. Maybe that will change, maybe not. They'll sure know something is up come Dday though!! Fun to hear other stories though from you ladies!

  • My 5 yo Bichon is still a jerk and still doesn't care I'm pregnant. At least his behavior hasn't gotten worse.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • Funny story. I remember on the day my baby was most likely conceived, my dog came up to me in bed and rested her head on my hip and looked at me. I remember it because she never did that before and her staring at me was a little weird. She always would lay on my husband and maybe on my leg if we were on the couch but never on my torso. She's been cuddly with me ever since. She still isn't careful about not stepping on my belly when we are playing (she's only ten pounds) but I've been training her not to before it's too late.
  • My pit is 2.5 and she new before I knew. She never was a destructive chewer and we would come home to a pairing my shoes demolished, never my husbands. My pit lab mix on the otherhand who is 5 is always my partner, super lovey but she won't cuddle on me anymore (she used to lay down your middle) she now likes to spoon and will run her nose on my belly. Love my dog children and can't wait to see them with their human sibling.
  • My dog has known for a while - and has also started barking more at night. This is the first time I have put together that it may be because he feels so much more protective! Thanks ladies!

The other day DH finally got to see the adorable new habit Max has of laying on the bed when I stand next to it and sniffing my belly then looking at me for the ok before licking my belly button LOL! It's so funny looking and tickles but I know he will be a great dog for our nug to grow up with!
