Stimulating contractions to help dilate cervix!?

I'm in the hospital now and about 3-4cm dilated and 80% effaced. I was having contractions 2 mins apart but they gave me iv fluid and they pretty much stopped. I'm 2 days over my due date and I know if I don't get some contractions going they will send me home to wait it out. Someone have any suggestions?

  • I hope your LO arrives soon. I'm not sure there is much you can do except wait it out.

  • It's up to your Dr. unfortunately.

  • I'm assuming your contractions are related to your dehydration.

The short story is that when you're dehydrated, your body (brain/pituitary) secretes antidiuretic hormone (ADH). Oftentimes the pituitary will release oxytocin at the same time as ADH, which can lead to contractions. Once a dehydrated pregnant mama gets back to normal "hydration status," the body stops responding to what it thinks is oxytocin telling the ute to contract. And the contractions go away.

It doesn't sound like you were ever in active labor, based on what you're telling us. But hang in there, it will happen. Maybe even later today! It's better to labor at home, IMO. Good luck :)
