Breastfeeding

Screaming baby

Hi! I have a 6 month old DD and so far breastfeeding has been going very well for us. LAtely though She pops on and off and screams and cries. I've tried massaging my breast as I nurse, I've switched her back and forth numerous times between breast (this seems to help a little) but eventually she just seems to give up and I give her a paci to calm her down. My breast aren't seeming as full as they used to (which I understand is a normal developement as your body produced exactly what baby needs) and I feel like i'm not feeling a let down as much as I used to (again I know this can be normal). She has two meals of baby food a day and since shes started all this screaming while nursing i've been giving her a bottle of pumped breastmilk after we nurse and before bed (usualy 2-3oz). I used to only pump when I was at work but since she started all of this i've been pumping a after she goes to bed, usually 4-6 hours after her last nursing session, and getting 2-3 oz. Today I timed her nursing sessions and they are all less than 10 (most are closer to 5 min)  minutes all consisting of these poping on and off and crying, but shes also nursing about every 1.5-2 hours. Is this normal? I'm trying not to jump to the conclusion that I have a low supply because she is having plenty of wet diapers and seems to be gaining weight (will have her check up next week). I just feel like she is not enjoying nursing and its frustrating for her. Thanks for any advice!

Re: Screaming baby

  • My baby is doing the same thing, she's 12 weeks old, only on bm, but has started screaming as of late...I check my nipple and bm is still flowing, tried switching sides, (like you it seems to help for a minute)...its so frustrating because I can't figure out what's wrong.

  • Is she teething? For some teething babes they will nurse to comfort but for others, the sucking bothers them and they may nurse less or even go on a nursing strike. My LO has been like this on and off recently. Sometimes I use a nipple shield and she seems to nurse longer because she doesn't work as hard.
  • I was also thinking it could be teething, It just feels like its been going on forever! Show me a tooth already!! lol. I'm glad that 5 minute nursing sessions are considered normal, I think that is what was bothering me the most. I'm hoping this phase ends soon and we can both enjoy nursing again. Thanks ladies!

  • This happened to me and my LO is 4 mo. It wasn't teething but I discovered that he just for distracted by his sureoundings so I've tried to nurse him in quiet places when possible or familiar places and that seems to help.
