Asking a dog question.

I know Parenting has lots of feels about dogs.

We just got a new puppy to replace our beloved (almost) 2 year old lab who was tragically hit Christmas Eve.

We got another chocolate lab except this one isn't as genetically pre-dispositioned to fetch as much as our old dog. I'm at a loss as to how to teach him to fetch, since as soon as we get down on his level to play, he immediately stops whatever he is playing and comes to lay on our laps, or right next to us and snuggle.

Other than this he is a sweet pup, we've had him a week and he's finally coming out of his shell and has stopped hiding by furniture every time someone walks through the room. He's also taken up potty training like a MF champ.

Anyone have great dog training advice? I feel like everything was easier with our last pup, and I'm trying to have some positive feelings towards this replacement pup. Should probably stop calling him the replacement pup.

  • Thanks everyone! Cobb is a good puppy! It's just funny to see how different personalities dogs of the same breed can have.

Looks like there will be plenty of throwing in my future!

  • How old is puppy?

I would focus on housebreaking and come, sit, stay, and heel first. You can train fetch later. It's a bonus command, not a requirement.

Most dogs that enjoy fetch are born knowing it or grow into it naturally. Don't stress about it. You'll find other fun things to do with this dog!

  • My permanent resident is a border collie/black lab mix.  If you throw a ball she just looks at you like you've been dropped on your head and basically tells you to go get it your lazy self.
My last foster was a boxer/pit.  He LOVED fetch.
My current foster is a leonberger mix.  Toss a ball for him and he doesn't even notice it go past him.  He just doesn't give a crap.

It is all about the dog and his/her personality.  Some like to fetch some don't.  If your pup is still really young, I would stick to working on the basics before worrying about fetch.
Good luck with your new dog.
