Opinions on Yarn

My sister got me a $50 gift card to Michael's and I want to start a new crochet project. I've used Red Heart Super Saver, but I'm curious about the Bernat value brand, Super Value.

I know there are a lot knitters and crocheters on the board ... Any opinions? Which value brand do you prefer?

@freezorburn‌ it's a fish scale purse. The pattern is actually on the Bernat website, but I've never used their super value yarn.

I just looked up Bernat Super Value in Ravelry's database and it seems to have a few good reviews. The ones I read said they liked the feel and quality of it better than Red Heart.

Red Heart super saver is good if you want to make something big that doesn't have to be incredibly soft at first. My grandma crocheted afghans for us her whole life and used red heart super saver- after a few washes and usage they are soft as ever.

I prefer Bernat for things like hats, scarves, etc because it isn't as coarse as red heart super saver. The red heart soft version is great though.

I went yarn shopping today (yayyyyyy!) And the Bernat super value is so much softer than the Ref Heart. But, I ended up going with Loops & Thread Impeccable because it's also very soft, I've used it before and like it and it was 50% off today.

I bought so much yarn today (all for specific projects/patterns) and then came home and started to organize my existing stash and realized I have a problem with buying too much yarn I never use. New resolutions for 2015: only buy yarn for specific projects (not just because it's on sale or pretty) and when starting a new project go shopping in my yarn stash first!

I'm in the same boat. No more buying yarn for a while until I knit down some of my stash. The exception is if I'm traveling and find something really special. I have to knit what I already have if I'm going to justify taking it all with me every time we move.

Here's what my stash looked like a couple of years ago, not including projects on the needles. I don't think I've made much of a dent in it, since I've probably only completed a few projects since I took this photo.

I have two big laundry baskets and two trash bags full of yarn, plus a large box of projects in progress, not counting the ones scattered around in their own bags.

Besides what I have bought, my mom likes to buy me yarn at estate sales. Little old ladies with yarn stashes and unfinished projects die, and you can buy bags full for a couple dollars.

I like patons yarn for making sweaters or scarfs, I got a very good deal on thanksgiving, they where five for nine dollars, I got so many the will be good for a few years.

My Dad talks my ear off about different types of yams if I happen to be visiting when he is taking them out of his garden. He is always growing 3-5 different kinds. There's a Japanese one that he is particularly fond of. Oh, and usually they are sweet potatoes. Apparently a yam is something different. And even as a plant geek I haven't been able to figure it out.
