34 weeks Dilated: Fingertip

I was wondering if anyone else had or was experiencing this... I am now 35 weeks as of tomorrow but at 34 weeks and 4 days I was a fingertip dilated and I guess my cervix is thinning already According to my doctor and he said my belly measures 36 cm from top to bottom. I am either a head of schedule or we have a big baby on our hands. I was kinda nervous about the news at first. I am more comfortable with it now. Wondering if anyone has experienced this or knows if someone else who has? Thanks for reading!!!

From what I've read it is not uncommon for women to be dilated (to varying degrees) for weeks before giving birth. Being dilated a cm or up to 3cm is what I seem to recall as being normal.

But I'm not a health practitioner.

I'd read some pregnancy books. Check out your local library if you have them. I'm sure you'd find a link I the indexes of several.

About the fundal height measurements, from what I've been told these measurements are incredibly inaccurate. Different practitioners have various results and even the same practitioner can get different results from the same patient with repeated measurements. My understanding is that they're used mostly to determine if there is growth concern (eg. No change over several weeks or massive change over a short time) rather than having anything to do with how far along you are in your pregnancy. Apparently they're also by that predictive of infant size.

You can start to dilate weeks before you go into labor, I'm 2cm when I was checked last and my fundal hieght is measuring over 50 weeks and I'm really 34.

I was in the same predicament. I was 33 weeks and days, I went from 0/4 in a matter of hours. I was/am still measuring 40 weeks, thankfully I'm still pregnant.

Fingertip dilated is nothing really. My dr said I was 1 cm dialated on monday but thick. Also nothing to get excited about. You never know how things will progress.

From what I heard and experienced, it's normal to be dilated weeks before delivery.

When I was pregnant with DS I was 1cm dilated at 36 weeks (and 80% effaced), 3cm and 90% effaced at 37 weeks, didn't get checked at 38 weeks, and had DS at 39+1 weeks. I was also measuring about 2 weeks ahead for the whole 3rd tri.

I was dilated 1 cm from 35 weeks until I went into labor with DD. Every time I got checked I was gradually thinning. My water broke at 40 weeks and I was still only 1.5 cm but completely thinned. After my water broke I went to 10 cm within 3 hours.

Standard answer:

You can be dilated for WEEKS (many, in fact) before you actually go into labor.

I hung out at 3 to 4 cm for almost a whole month, with no other labor signs.

I've been dilated at 1cm since 26w & have just recently been checked & am just now at 1.5cm at 34w.

Like others said, fundal height isn't the most accurate. You are doing great.

Think of the 9th month as your labor month. Your body does a slow pre-labor for weeks, including thinning, early slow dialating, and softening of your cervix. It shows you are getting ready for labor.

There are actually several things the cervix has to do to be ripe for labor which doesn't just include dilation and effacement. Everyone needs to cool it.

I'd keep calm over being a fingertip dilated. You can walk around like that for weeks and would never know, besides you still have a LONG way to go.

I've known women who have walked around at 4cm dilated for weeks. Fingertip is no big deal, and I'd actually take it as a good sign.
