High-Risk Pregnancy

Cerclage placed and no bed rest?

Hi Everyone! I was pretty active here two years ago while I was pregnant with my twin girls.  I went into PTL with the and had an IC (cervix was .6cm).  No cerclage was placed bc they wouldn't do it with twins at 22 weeks.  I was placed on hospital bed rest from 22-30 weeks when they were born.

I am currently 23 weeks pregnant with a singleton and had an emergent cerclage placed on New Years Eve due to IC.  After the procedure I was told to go home and take it easy for a few days.  I can lift my girls (two years old) but I should try not to and no gym until I've had a few stable scans of my cervix.  If everything is stable I can return to life as normal.  My MFM's cited research that states bed rest is not proven to be effective and can even be harmful.  I actually found the study and it appears that the women that went on bed rest were 3 times more likely to give birth preterm as compared to women not on any restrictions.

I am looking for success stories of cerclages and those who were NOT placed on bed rest.  Every story I read about cerclages has the woman being placed on bed rest immediately after.

Re: Cerclage placed and no bed rest?

  • I have no personal experience with IC, but my doctor initially thought I might be a candidate due to certain things that happened in both of my pregnancies.  I was told that I probably would not be put on bed rest with a cerclage, unless my cervix was extremely then and/or funneling.  I too have read that bed rest has not been proven, but it is very controversial.  Some people swear by it. Good luck.

  • I'm wondering too!  I had a cerclage placed at 13 weeks (now almost 16 weeks) since my cervix was measuring 1.8 cm.  My doctor told me not to lift my daughter for a week after the procedure and to take it easy, but after that I could go back to normal routine.  I was concerned, since I read a lot of women had a cerclage placed and then were immediately put on bed rest.  I did ask if I would need to go on bed rest before I had the procedure done, and my doctor said possibly, but at the moment I was ok.  I had my 2 week follow-up on Tuesday and my doctor said everything feels tight, so hopefully that means baby will stay put for a while!

  • this is my second pregnancy had cerclage placed at 14 weeks no bedrest life back to normal even sex I am 34 weeks today, my cerclage was placed before cervix got short and its still long and closed.  first pregnancy emergency cerclage placed at 20 weeks waterbag bulging and dilating on bedrest till 34 weeks when stitch was removed had child two days later
  • I had an emergency cerclage 4 days ago. I am 24 weeks. My cervix measured 1.8 cm. My Dr. Said no lifting, stairs, or walking more than 20 minutes at a time. I do go back to work tomorrow. High school art teacher. I plan to try and sit most of the day and have the kids come to me. If my cervex is still shrinking when they check this Thursday, they are going to put in a paserie (spelling?) To hold it up. I have had a lot of Braxton hicks since 18 or 19 weeks and am on medicine to help stop those. I can't go on full bed rest as I am the only income and only have enough sick days for when my little Kyzik comes. I just keep praying it stops shrinking! They said they would take the stiches out at 36 weeks.
  • Thanks for the reassurance everyone.  I believe that a lot of the stories I heard were a year or more old and I suppose doctors have changed their views since then or actually started implementing what they knew as best practice by not recommending bed rest.

I go in tomorrow morning for my first cervix check since my cerclage.  I am really hoping that it is stable!
  • I had a cerclage placed at 18 weeks and did not go on any bedrest. I have a desk job and 4 other children, but I just try my best to take it easy. I haven't had any issues with my cervix and I am at 35w5d with the cerclage being removed this coming Monday. Best of luck to you!
  • I had my weekly cerclage check and it must be working. My cervix length went from 1.8 to 2.6! Trying to rest even on a busy schedule is tough but if it's working then I will keep myself in check!
  • Doc is saying with this pregnancy that I will not be in bed rest and my cerclage will be placed in a week or two. Down time will be that day and that's it. Last time I was in bed rest for 5 mo.
  • I had a cerclage my last pregnancy and was not on bed rest. I was put on pelvic rest and I couldn't work out, nothing more than just walking. My ob also said she doesn't prescribe bed rest as it hasn't been proved to be beneficial. I never had any cervical shortening so it wasn't an issue, but had there been, I likely would have put myself on at least modified bed rest.
