Same problem, different month :/

I've posted before needing help with sleep and I'm back. My girls are 17.5 mos and have never been good sleepers. I don't mind a MOTN feeding, but now I'm wondering if it's confusing them.

We bedshared until Oct or so and then moved them to cribs because no one was sleeping well. We also extended time between feeds from 2 to 4 hrs. They still wake frequently and if I go in, they cannot be soothed other than nursing. It's a lot for my husband to have to handle (all the wakings except the 2am one when I nurse them) and they literally wake 4-8x/nite.

They go to bed on their own, at nap and bedtime. Nap can take over an hr at times and they usually sleep 45m-1hr wake and the only way to get them back down is to nurse. That said they nap 2+ hrs at daycare....

I'm totally exhausted, in tears regularly, and not parenting the way I want to parent.

They share a room, we don't like CIO, but I don't know what do to. Both my husband and I end up so frustrated almost every say and nite time is really tough. We somehow managed for 17 mos but it's finally catching up with us.

Do I need to nite wean? Am I confusing them?

  • I wish I had words of advice, I'm sorry you're having a rough time.

Night weaning may not necessarily mean they will STTN, but it might be worth a shot. I'm not familiar with your other posts, but I know a lot of moms reccomend Jay Gordon's method for nightweaning if you decide to go that route.

I hope you find something that works! My LO is almost 12 months and we are in a similar boat. I'm just hoping it gets better :(

    Good luck!

  • Thanks. We used Jay Gordon's suggestions to extend time between feeds. I don't really want to nite wean, but am wondering if my (in their minds) random nursing is confusing :/

  • There have been a lot of posts on my BMB around the 18 month point of LOs sleep regressing. A lot of kids who were STTN are now waking. My LO is generally a good sleeper but was waking a lot. I really thought it had to do with teething. Any chance the canines or molars are coming in? We began giving Motrin at bedtime, and she would wake at 4am (exactly 8 hours later) so I think that may have been it. I'm not suggesting just drugging them, but if it seems like it could be teething, it may give you a longer stretch. The other thing is maybe they keep waking because they are holding out for the boob. Like you said....confusing for them that sometimes they get it and sometimes they don't. Maybe an option would be to do a shorter feeding each time they wake. I've read the approach (I don't remember the name) where you just keep shortening the nursing times until they are so short, they finally give them up. I'm like you and not a fan of CIO, so I would only nurse 10 min and put her back in the crib. That was long enough to settle her. The good news is shortly after 19 months she went back to STTN 8pm-7:30am about 80% of the time, and only one waking on the other days (down from every 2 hours). I have no idea how you've managed so long. Hopefully they'll be sleeping better soon. Virtual cookies for you!
