Siblings

Im just wanting to hear all about everyone's older children.
Are they excited, jealous or simply don't care about a new baby.
Do you get them involved in your pregnancy?

We have two sons aged 6 and 4. They are both very excited but my oldest son has surprised us the most. He always told us to never have another baby cause he didn't like babies and yet from the moment we told them he has been thrilled. Everyday he talks to my belly, asks to know all the baby's progress, he even wants to come to all the midwife appointments etc.
He was very upset when we told him that he won't be there though when the baby is being born. It broke my heart to see him so upset over it :(
Our youngest son doesn't care very much. At 4 he pretty much only cares about Lego and spiderman lol But now he has informed us that he will cry and not like the baby if it's not a boy.

Re: Siblings

  • My daughter (5) is very excited about me having another baby, but she wants a baby sister or else she says I can take the baby back for a refund lol.

My son (2) doesn't really understand, so I'm not really too sure lol.

  • My daughter is 21 and is indifferent to me and the baby. My son will be 16 at the end of April and is excited to have a new brother. He has wanted a younger sibling his whole life and is excited to finally be a big brother. I think he may be slightly excited that around the time he gets his license I will have something else to focus on other than him.
  • My DD is 5 and will be 6 when her little brother is born. She talks to him every day and keeps asking me when he will come out. We've tried to encourage her enthusiasm by constantly reminding her how much she will be teaching him and what a big responsibility it is to be a big sister. She's really excited!

  • My 4 year old is totally uninterested.
My 2 year old is so excited. She was insistent on having a baby brother (lucky for her blood test indicated boy), she gives us name suggestions and tells me how she's going to cuddle the baby when he cries. I think the reality when baby arrives is going to be veeeeery different.
  • DD (just turned 3) is finally starting to show some interest.  We read sibling books every night and talk about baby a lot.  I ordered her a Bitty Baby doll so she can "mother" it to get a better grasp about what is going to be happening in a few months.  I know there is going to be A LOT of jealousy once the baby is born though.

  • DS is 17 months old and doesn't quite get it yet. His whole little world is going to change. We are expecting some resistance initially, but we think he'll be a great big brother ;;)
  • DD just turned 4 and she is super excited. She tells everyone about the babies, and what she has named them (Flower and Daisy). She gets very upset when we tell her we are not naming them that, like real tears upset....it's a little cute.

She is great with my nephew (7 months) and always wants to help with him, so I know she will be a great big sister. I also know she is going to have a lot of adjusting to do, but I am sure it will all work out.

  • My 4 year old and very excited and very protective over the baby - it's adorable. Whenever my 2 year old is being too rough with me (climbing all over me and whatnot) he tells him "be careful or you're going to break the baby!!" He always asks how big it is and wants to look at pictures online of the baby at that stage. He's really is the best big brother, I'm so happy for him to have another sibling.

My 2 year old doesn't quite get it. We talk about the baby in mommy's tummy and we're always pointing out babies but I think he's just oblivious. It's a hard concept for a 2 year old.

  • DD is almost 2 and pretty oblivious. If I ask her where baby is and to talk to baby she will pull up my shirt and mess with my stomach (sometimes anyways!)

I am hoping she'll be excited when baby gets here. She loves her baby dolls and is obsessed with her two baby cousins so hopefully that's a good sign! I am definitely nervous about the transition from 1 to 2 and the division of time and energy--but I'm sure after some adjustment it will be fine.

Our 8 year old is thrilled. When we told him this past weekend he said "that was on my Christmas list!" :) He has been making things for the baby. Our 5 year old is hard to read. I don't think he really gets it.

  • I have a 1, 2, and 3 year old. The older two are very excited. They keep asking if the baby can come now. They will be there when I go to the hospital. They will be out of the room during the pushing part, but will be allowed to come back while I labor and will be the first to come back and see the baby as soon as it is born.

My almost 3 year old is pretty excited, although I'm sure she doesn't really grasp just how permanent this change is going to be. She tells me she wants the baby to come out now. She says it's a girl (one week until we know) and that we should either name her Rapunzel or Baby Margaret (Daniel Tiger's new baby sister). Oh and she will just randomly look at my belly and touch it and say in the cutest little voice "Oh, mommy. Your belly is getting bigger!" Love her. I'm hitting the emotional stage where I am so sad that her life is going to be forever changed, even though it'll be for the better. It's tough. She's my baby....

  • Mine 12 yr old DS fluctuates from being excited to pissed that we are having another one. I think a lot of it is being the oldest. And the preteen hormonal craziness.
My 9 yr old DS is thrilled and wants to know why it's not twins or triplets b/c apparently that would be so cool mom. I explain that God is not that cruel. Thank goodness.
The 6 yr DD is excited. But only if it's a girl. She said it can't be another brother b/c she'll just run away. She may be slightly dramatic about it.
16 month old DS is clueless. Although today he noticed my stomach. And started jumping on it. And hitting it. And then falling over with laughter. Apparently we are starting the sibling torture early. :P
  • My 3 year old is uber excited.  He calls the baby "my baby" (like we just finished reading him a bedtime story and he announced "I don't like this story, let's give it to my baby.")  He outed me at his preschool (which was fine, we didn't tell him until we were ready for people to know) because he was telling everyone he's getting a baby sister.

  • We have a 2 year old son. I don't know how much he really understands. When he's asked where the babies are, he runs to me and pulls up my shirt. He then says "mommy's tummy" and gives my belly a kiss. We ask him how many babies are in there and he proudly says "2"! My mom got him a baby doll for Christmas and he carries that thing everywhere. It laughs and cries. When it cries, he hugs it and pats it's back and says "baby ok". He's really excited, but I don't think he knows how much everything is going to change. One new sibling is a lot, but he'll have 2. Definitely have to work out time management.

  • DS is almost 18 months. He doesn't get it, but if I tell him there's a baby in my belly he will kiss it. Sometimes he'll just randomly run up to me and pull my shirt up too, lol.
  • DS is almost 3 and the last two days has been obsessed with the baby. He constantly wants to lift my shirt and kiss my belly, brings over toys and today even wanted to show baby his favorite show, so I had to sit there with my shirt up. He keeps saying 'aw baby, she's so cute!' and insists its a sister, we haven't found out yet! Last week he knew there was a baby in my belly but didn't seem to care, I think I am starting to show and that prompted him to get excited. Now I am worried that he will ask for the baby to come out every day for 6 months!

  • I asked my 2 1/2 DS if he wants a baby brother, as he is obsessed with the babies at daycare, he said "no I want a car." Smart boy!

  • I'm a FTM, but these stories are so adorable I wanted to share one I have. Not a sibling obviously, but I'm a nanny for a girl who will be three this month. When I told her, she gave my belly this look, and backed away very slowly. Since then, she's been telling her mom all about how she doesn't want to share her toys with my baby. We haven't had the heart to tell her DH and I are planning to move shortly after baby's arrival and I won't be watching her anymore. :(

  • My two year old is interested in the weekly videos and loves to hear the doppler at my appointments, but I seriously don't think he understands what it means.
  • My son is 2.5 he sometimes talks about the baby in my tummy.  He came to my last appointment and heard the HB.  I bought him a baby doll the other day and he's so attached to it right now.  I'm hoping we can use "baby" to help him understand what a new baby is going to be like.

  • My 4.5 year DD is so excited. She had never expressed interest in a sibling (don't think she knew it was possible. :) ) so we weren't really sure how she'd react. But, she is so excited to be a big sister! She doesn't have a preference on gender, but refers to baby as he more than she....

  • My 2 year old is very excited and will lift my shirt up and say hi to the baby and rub my belly and give it kisses...he also will say baby to anything that he thinks or knows is for the baby...it's so adorable :)
