Pumping problems

I am not responding to a pump today. I've had this happen before, but with new parts then using a friends pump, Ive been able to pump enough (just barely). But I pumped for 30 minutes and got an ounce after work, normally I'd get about 3. Now I've been pumping for about 20 minutes and haven't gotten anything.

I've tried two sets of parts, new membranes, and both pumps today. Problem is that I'm supposed to work a double at work tomorrow (10:45-8 ish). I barely have a freezer stash, but enough for tomorrow, but I'm going to be miserable by about 5 if I can't pump/feed LO.

I don't know what to do. I know I'm not empty bc I can hand express some milk. I was short 5 oz already today.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm asking, but what do I do? I'm thinking of running to Walmart before work and getting a manual pump in hopes that it'll help some, but this stresses me out a ton.

Re: Pumping problems

  • That sounds super frustrating.

You've basically done anything I would suggest.  Hand expressing sucks, but I would try that before rushing out to buy a manual.

Has your period come back yet?Have you taken supplements?

  • maybe try taking a hot shower and then pumping? Or putting hot towels on your boob.

  • @Kewii‌ - I suck at hand expressing and can only get an oz or so at a time.

@Monster1984‌ - that was one of my problems before. I actually use two diff sized shields.

Would any supplements help? I have milk in there, it just won't come out!

Ugh this is just so upsetting and frustrating and we so close to a year!

  • if you have milk in there I don't think you necessarily need supplements, you just need to get the milk out, KWIM? If this is just starting it may be a stress thing and the more stressed you get about not pumping enough the less likely you are to respond to the pump.

but if it is an issue of each time you pump you are getting less and less over time then it may be a supply issue in which case supplement could help.

    hope that helps!

  • Sorry, I fell asleep after reading the post earlier.

    I agree with this.
I don't pump, but... If it's close to feeding time and I'm in the shower I will get a letdown. When I raise my arms to wash my hair I get a letdown.
Let warm water run over your body, hot if you can stand it. (If you can't shower, then hot packs are good too)

Do you notice any movements that cause you to feel a letdown? Arms up, bending over, reaching...? (Some women have letdowns when they think of sex... ;) )

Also, try to be less stressed about it. I know it's hard, but relax.
  • I'm so sorry! I would take a hot shower, try to relax for 15 minutes, and then try again. If that doesn't work then go get a manual pump. I love my manual pump. Good luck! I'm sure you are just having an off day.
  • Hot shower, some boob massage like when getting out a clogged duct an look at pics of your LO. When my pumping is slow/low I look at pics if LO when she was younger and it seems to help with the letdown. Good luck!
