Sleep Woes.....

I.cant.take.it.anymore. Seriously. Back in Aug, I worked with LO as bed time turned into a disaster over the summer with too many things throwing us off a schedule. It paid off and she was a fantastic sleeper until early Nivember when the last two teeth came in.....this brought us to an illness in early December and now here we are. Up every F-ing night lately. I am totally at my wits end. I reached my breaking point tonight and will not go in there. I sent my husband in so I know she is fine.....but we have been having this stand off for an hour and a half. And each second that passes brings me closer to losing my own shit. I have absolutely NO idea why she won't STTN right now, but sadly all I can think of is she wants her way (which is to be cuddled) and is showing her stubborn side (which she apparently gets from her dad.) Did anyone else go through something similar? Please tell me how to fix it! CIO has always been successful in this house but we have never gone this long.....she is literally going from crying to talking to herself back to crying, so I know she's not in pain.........uggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! If anyone has advice please lay it on me!

Re: Sleep Woes.....

  • Hugs JB. P has been up every 2 hours for the past 2 weeks. So I finally gave in and started CIO last night (solo! Yikes!)
As hard as it is to hear, if she's alternating between crying and talking, she's fine and just being stubborn. Just keep hanging in there.
Alternatively, how good is she at understanding logic? E has recently gotten to the point where she can understand us talking to her. We go in and let her know that it is bedtime. Everyone is in bed asleep, and she needs to sleep too. It has been working mostly though I know she's older than yours.

  • Thanks TJ. Thankfully she fell asleep shortly after I posted this. I just hope this phase does indeed pass. I am exhausted, and as a mother I find these sleep woes spells to be so difficult. Typically after we have a solid CIO night like last night things start to improve right after. FX that is the case this time.

  • How are her naps during the day?  I found with D, that when we were better about getting him on a scheduled 2 naps a day (which then turned into 1 mid day nap when he was around 11 months), that he his sleeping through the night got much better.  Also, he is much happier to fall asleep on his own when he has his lovie with him in his crib (he has a stuffed lamb that he takes everywhere). It helps keep him happy even though he is alone and we aren't there with him as he is falling asleep...

It sounds like the worst part of the night is trying to get her to go to sleep.  Does she stay asleep once she is asleep or does she wake up during the night?

  • Oh no - the worst part of the night is MOTN. She goes down with no issues. Sometimes cries for a few minutes but is almost always asleep within 5 minutes of being put to bed. Any wake up however seems to be a couple hour event more often than not

Do you go in right away when she wakes up in the MOTN?  Or have to given her time to start to try to soothe?  I ask because with D we had gotten into a routine of going in whenever he woke up, so that was what he was expecting.  So when we tried to break that cycle it took a while for him to understand.  He would get frustrated when we wouldn't go in (and thus stay up for a long time) but the reality was he didn't need us-- he wasn't hungry, didn't need a change, wasn't sick, etc, he just wanted to be rocked.  It took a long time at first, but eventually he would get tired and fall back asleep.  Then after a while he got used to the new routine and now he will fall back asleep on his own quicker.

Also, I know you said its every two hours, but does it seem to happen a lot around 4am?  I've read that around 4 is a natural time for babies to be sleeping the lightest and so that is a time they are likely to wake up for a few minutes and go back to sleep...

I know exactly how you are feeling--no matter what anyone says, having a baby that doesn't sleep well is one of the most stressful things you can go through.  You need sleep to function!

  • H does this sometimes and was doing it consistently for a couple of weeks. I think I found the culprit for us, two year old molars. Ours are only 30 days apart so it could also be a phase. Sometimes H sounds super scared so I think nightmares are playing a role too. We don't go in unless he works himself up so much that he's coughing/nearly puking. Hugs, it's not easy!

  • DD went through something similar starting before thanksgiving. Got her last two canines and 2-3 colds back to back. Then was better for one night and started waking up again and then throwing up when she cried hard so we had to get her (turns out that was likely an ear infection). We started cutting out nursing at night once she was better. Now I only go in if she's crying hard and I rock her for 2min in the glider, 1min swaying, and 30sec rubbing patting her back (yes I count in my head). Obviously not quite them same, but wanted to share to let you know I feel you and maybe it'll spark an idea for.

My only other suggestion (not that I'm an expert, its just because i've been where you are) is *maybe* give her more time in the MOTN?  I know its super hard because you want to go to her, and also because its disrupting your sleep and YH's sleep, but in the long run it might put her in a better routine.  Its just a suggestion though, and you totally have to do what you are comfortable with.

Good luck-- I hope you get some rest!!
