  • Loading the player...
  • My niece is Madelyn Rae. I love the name-and definitely like this spelling the best
  • Madeline Grace. Madelyn Grace would be my next pick.

My BFF is Madalyn and people are forever butchering her name.

  • Yeah... None of those. The last one is too much!!
  • I like the spelling of Madelyn and Grace as MN

  • Please. Put yourself in your future daughter's shoes for a moment. Imagine spelling your name in school, at doctor's offices, at work, over the phone with companies, etc.
Do not torture her like this. Traditional spelling is best.

    Madeleine is the only option.

    Possibly Madeline

Never some random made up spelling. Good lord. These are people we are naming not pets or dolls.

I've actually never seen it spelled "Madeleine" .. Is that the proper spelling?!

And with all of these different spellings I'm now confused with how you are pronouncing her name to begin with..
    Is it Mad.A.Lynn or Mad.A.line ?

  • Anything other than Madeline makes it look like you are trying to hard to not name your child a super popular name.

  • Op, scratch all of those weird spellings and go with Magdalene.. That should zero out any pronunciation issues! Bonus.. You can even NN her Maggie!

By the way, what's with the huge influx of naming threads? I thought we covered the bases on this weeks ago. Let's talk food.. I'm starving.

  • Traditional spelling and Grace as a middle name - that's my vote.

I am in the " I have to spell my 4 letter name all of the time" camp as well as the "I never had anything personalized" camp.

    Go with traditional spelling.

  • I agree with others and don't care for the odd spellings. If you prefer a unique spelling, make it a shorter one because she will have have to spell it out to people the rest of her life. I've had to do it with my last name and I wouldn't want to have to spell my first name too. Just my two cents. Congrats on the girl!
  • I like grace the best. But I don't like any of the spellings for the first name.

Madeline or Madilyn are the only spellings I can get behind.

    I agree
  • Madeleine (original French) or Madeline are the only acceptable spellings in my book.

  • Curious as to why OP has yet to respond. She thought it was necessary to post it here rather than the name board (they would of had a hay day with this one!!) ....... so how about it OP?

  • I'm curious as to the answer to the question of why she wants to make up the spelling, because this has been a common phenomenon that I want to understand.
  • Do you have to spell out your own name for people? I grew up with a long first and last name that needed to be carefully spelled out for everyone. It is really annoying. Don't do this to your child.

This! My name is also very long and happens to be Danish which makes it very uncommon. I get a lot of compliments on it now but growing up I always had to correct people.

  • I agree with traditional spellings. I actually work on a labour floor and things are getting out of hand with spellings and namings. Stop changing Cs to Ks, and stop putting a Y in where ANY other vowel goes!

As for pronunciations, Madeleine is the typically French way of spelling and is pronounced Mad-e-LENN.  or even Mad-LENN, as two syllables.
Madeline is a more American way of spelling and pronouncing it, as Mad-e-LINE.

  • Madeline or Madelyn, Grace or Rae.
  • Please don't do that to your daughter. Go with the traditional spelling.

  • As a teacher, it doesn't matter the spelling. Every Madelyn in the class will be pronounced the same and will need a nickname or last initial. I have 2 Kali's in a class. They spell it different, but doesn't matter when I call on them.
Please go with a traditional spelling and make her life much happier. The spelling won't make her unique. Her personality will.
