Another freak out moment: heartbeat

Okay first of all sorry for posting threads that I am freaking out--- but I have an at home fetal doppler...and..

I usually get a heartbeat between 135 and 150 ( it is always seems a bit higher at the doctors) but today I got a reading at 175!?! It has never even been close to that. I am 17 weeks. I think maybe the doppler was just being weird. But it does kind of scare me. I did take a percocet earlier because I started to get a migraine ( prescribed by OB), I was thinking that could be the reason. What do you guys think, should I be concern at all?

  • ^^wss. Also remember that your heartrate raises and lowers depending upon activity. Baby's will vary even more so. 175 is still within normal range.

  • Thanks for responses. I think I wouldn't be so worried if my LO heart rate wasn't always on the low side. I would delete this thread because I feel bad about writing it. My anxiety has trippeled the last couple of weeks, something I will talk to the doctor about my next visit. I had panic disorder and generalize anxiety disorder pre pregnancy and got off my meds when I got pregnant. And I was doing okay but the last few weeks have been horrible!! And I am taking it out on the board by asking questions--sorry!! Thanks ladies!
  • I agree with PP. If you were already dealing with anxiety pre-pregnancy, an at home Doppler may bring on undue stress and anxiety for you.

It's a good idea to have a chat with your doctor about your increased anxiety. I wish you the best!

Throw out the Doppler, it will only make your anxiety worse. FHR can be elevated for many reasons. Baby was probably just active.

Eta I have the medical knowledge to use a Doppler appropriately but I choose not to have one at home. Auscultation with no education tells you very little about fetal well being. Fetal movement past 26-28 weeks is the best way to tell baby is healthy in there. If there was something wrong at 16--18 weeks there is nothing they could do anyways so why stress yourself.

  • When I told my OB I had a doppler he was less than pleased, and he knows I spend all day listening to fetal heart at work so I am proficient.

I've really stopped using mine because I came to the sobering realization that if there is no heart rate, there is nothing I can do; even if I'm 39 weeks. There's no warning either. Sorry for being a Debbie downer.

  • From what I understand, baby's heartbeat fluctuates all day...anything up to 190 is considered "normal". Just take comfort that there IS a heartbeat and talk to your dr next appointment:)

  • the readouts on those things are almost NEVER accurate - theres a reason theyre 30 bucks - while the one your doctor has is probably 2-300. and if your reaction to the doppler is anything other than "oh cool, i can hear it!" or "oh well, couldnt find it today", throw it out.
