Help... Sick baby

I thought DS was teething since Christmas due to fussiness and poor sleeping. Today he woke up with a fever and runny nose. Last night I got about 3 hours of sleep (had to wake up for work at 5:30) the baby would wake up screaming every 20 minutes but then go back to bed. He has napped a lot today but slept soundly. We put him to bed at 7 like normal and every 5-10 minutes he is crying out for a few seconds then back to bed. He also is so restless and all over the crib. Gave him ibuprofen before bed but I don't know what to do. I have to work again tomorrow and need to sleep. I'm going to turn the sound part of the monitor off since he is right next door and we can hear him really crying without it. Hoping I won't hear every cry this way. How can I help him??

Re: Help... Sick baby

  • DH was going to take him to the doc today but after he woke up, he was fine. A lot more naps but otherwise wasn't too bad. Maybe still teething? When he got his bottom teeth he was up a lot more at night and constantly tired/fussy during the day but no fever. Whatever it is, I just hope it passes!

  • Took his temp before the meds 98.6
  • Since starting DC in Nov DD has been sick almost the entire time. When she's had a runny nose we've given her Benadryl, which clears out her nose and helps her sleep. We run a humidifier every night, we use the Nose Frida and saline in the morning and at night, as needed.

After the runny nose, she developed a cough. We gave her cough medicine for a bit. She's also been on antibiotics for a nose infection, which the doctor told us you can differentiate from just a runny nose because the substance that comes out of the nose is much thicker and yellow.

Hopefully your LO will feel better soon. Our DD hasn't had a fever through this all so I don't know if there might be something else wrong. You'll definitely want to get the fever under control.
  • Thanks. Great ideas. His temp this morning was 101.7 but went down with meds. I think we will take him tomorrow just to see. We do have a humidifier in his room which helps with the chapped nose. This is the first time he has been sick and it's scary. And I'm a nurse! All my training goes out the window when it comes to family... I can't help but over think everything
  • PPs have given good advice so far, but I have to say it sounds a lot like an ear infection. Those are always more painful at night for babies especially. I mean, I am sure there is a teething aspect in there as well but you should prob take LO to see the pedi.

  • For those of you that had LOs with ear infections... Did they cry while nursing? I thought he was teething because he would even cry when nursing but I'm sure sucking with an ear infection may also hurt
  • Sorry your LO is sick. We use saline drops and a humidifer when our LO had a cold. I hope your LO feels better soon!

  • This was the exact same thing that happened to E. I took her to the pediatrician and sure enough a very bad ear infection in her right ear. We're on the 3rd day of antibiotics. I'd take your LO one as soon as possible. I'm also giving her baby Motrin to help ease the pain.

E's appetite is drastically changed over the last four days and is now getting better today. She wouldn't take more than 3 oz at a time from a bottle and only nursed a few times a day. Hope your LO feels better soon.

  • Thanks! Taking him to the pedi today.
  • My MIL took him because we both had to work. They said no ear infection just a bad cold. And eczema. I wonder if teething is the main culprit but MIL said he looked at his throat not necessarily his gums. I guess only time will tell
  • DS has another cold after being insanely sick 2 weeks ago (thanks daycare). But I have a feeling it has to do more with teething since he's really stuffy and I noticed he's drooling like a madman. He wakes up crying and starts throwing his body around. The only thing that works is saline drops, nosefreida and the boob. He's been sleeping on the boob for the last two nights. It's the only way I get some sleep. My poor baby.
  • Hope little one is feeling better now
  • Ya he is sleeping better but still not his happy carefree self. Thanks for all the advice and kind words!
