CPF: Does your LO recognize body parts?

We have been working with P to point to his nose/our noses for what seems like forever. I thought he was starting to get it bc he would sometimes point to mine, but now I'm not sure. Does your J13'er point to body parts when asked?

  • I'd say like any skill, don't be surprised if this comes and goes. Do you sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes? We sing that and make up songs about body parts when we take a bath.

  • Head, tummy, nose usually 100%. Eyes, ears, mouth, feet are more variable, but they know them.

Sawyer knows almost all body parts. We practice every day. It's a good distraction when he's being crazy. To calm him down from whatever, I ask him where is your nose, etc. usually he has to touch everyone's who is in the room.

This exactly. We start going through all the body parts when I need him to calm down. He can repeat most of them after me now too. (But not necessarily well. You should hear him say shoulders lol)

  • DS knows where everyone's ears are.  Not sure why that one stuck.  The other parts are hit or miss.
  • DD knows head, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hands, fingers, toes, and tummy.

Tess knows where several are-- she'll point to hair, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, belly, and feet-- but she doesn't say them.  She's still not saying many words.

If you ask her what a monster says, she will growl at you.  Only "animal" sound she knows.

The belly is especially popular, and if she's being fussy asking her where her belly is often snaps her out of it.

  • At LOs 15 month appt the pedi said he should be able to identify 2 parts...I was like uh...so we started working on it. He can do head, mouth, nose, belly button, toes. And sometimes shoulders, ears, and knees. BUT only when he wants to cooperate

Basically this. I hadn't been working on it at all until the 15 month appointment. Since then we've gotten belly button and occasionally mouth and nose. Loves that belly button though :)

  • We sing, point with our fingers and his, and have several picture books that we go through. Still nada.

Honestly, he doesn't really point come to think of it. Not even to us though he knows who we are.
  • He will lift up his shirt if I ask him where his belly is. That's about it. One of his few words is sock (or rather saaa), but if I ask him what his foot is, he says sock even if he isn't wearing any.

  • She does eyes, ears, nose, hair, mouth, hands, feet, legs and belly mostly. Sometimes the eyes and ears confuse her.

Once I was asking where her toy egg was and she pointed at her leg. Haha

  • E's pretty good at identifying body parts. I've always said each name as I put lotion on her at bed time. We also sing 'Head, shoulders, knees and toes,' and as a trick to calm her down for naps, I'd ask her to find mommy's nose, eyes and ears.
  • I think nose was the first for us, too. She knows a lot of body parts by name and pointing them out:
eyes, ears, mouth, teeth, nose, chin, cheeks, head, hair, shoulders, tummy, belly button, (which she says "belly butt" and cracks us up), arms, hands, bum, legs, feet, and toes.

I got that "Where is Baby's Belly Button?" book after our "freebie" failed. I think that reading that over and over helped a lot.
  • She knows/says most of them, but her belly button is her one true love.

If you do not already own The Belly Button Book by Sandra Boynton, you might want to. :D
Definitely - we are all beebos, all the time over here.

This one looks so cute, @maryannespier :) We will have to get that one soon.
  • She doesn't say them, but can point to hair, eyes, ears, nose, teeth, toes and belly button/ tummy. I'm trying to get her to know cheeks, bum and hands.

We have lots of Sandra Boynton, but not that one! Our board books seem to be procreating, though, so I'm sure it'll arrive soon.

  • Hands, feet, toes, eyes, mouth, nose, hair, ears, belly...
  • We have a couple over here. Belly button is definitely his favorite.
  • Yep! Head, hair, eye, nose, mouth, teeth, ear, belly, belly button, nipple, goober (penis), hands, feet, and piggies :) the nipple and goober are thanks to my constant shirtless husband who has ensured our son knows where the penis is.

My kid trys to pick at her belly button off... It's an outie... Anyone else's LO do that? Or is my kid just an oddball? lol.
Haddock stabs at his and mine. It's slightly painful at times!
  • Belly / belly button

We work in others, he's just not there yet.

  • My girls both love the book I Love You Through and Through. I have them point to their body parts or the pictures when the story starts talking about them.

  • Adeline went through a phase of being obsessed with eyes...not fun when she would suddenly look at me and try to shove her finger in mine while shouting "EYESSSSSS!"  She can identify and say nose, ears, mouth, and eyes and can identify belly, vagina (vulva), feet, toes, arms, hands and fingers.
