Basement nursery?

Good morning, ladies! I have a problem that Monsieur Google can't help me with. We bought a new apartment when we found out we were having baby, and the downstairs is actually a basement that has been redone into 2 rooms. There is no mold or dangers and in each room there are two small windows that face into the courtyard. It doesn't look like a basement except for the weird windows, it's completely finished. Upstairs is the biggest bedroom with huge windows. I was always planning on giving baby the upstairs room because "you can't put a baby in a basement" but now with more construction going on, the downstairs bedroom is going to be really tiny. So small that we can have our bed there and that's it. But it would be lots of space a crib, rocking chair, play Mat etc for baby. Would you consider having your nursery downstairs if this was you? Or am I crazy for now considering it? I truly don't know. Thanks in advance!!!

  • @redbluepurple I literally said "huh!"outloud after reading your response. Maybe it's just one of those things i over thought too much and it blew up in my head! I feel a weight being lifted already!
  • Loading the player...
  • I would temporarily move the master bedroom to the basement and set up the nursery next door down there. The upstairs bedroom can be a guest bedroom until you feel comfortable switching floors.
  • For convenience you at want to have the baby closer to you if you're breastfeeding. We plan on having our little one in our room for 5-6 months before moving her to her own room. I don't see anything wrong with having a baby in the basement if you're comfortable with it. Just make sure they are not too close to the electrical box and there's no mold or bugs and you should be fine!
  • I would probably want there to be egress windows in the baby's nursery if I had it in the basement, but other than that I wouldn't have a problem with it. That being said, I found it much easier to have the baby in the same room as me for the first few months at least, rather than on a separate floor.

Agree with this. My main concern would be access incase of fire upstairs. In many counties basement bedrooms are illegal if they do not have access and egress, for this reason.

This is exactly what I think.

  • We have a really small nursery as well, 10x10 feet. After seeking advice from our family, we decided to put a twin sized be in there too. Baby can eventually grow into it and if baby is really fussy or sick DH or I can sleep in the room to be close while the other gets a good nights sleep if we're both exhausted. Something like that might be something to consider in case you get tired of walking up and down the stairs. Good luck!

We have a similar situation... Our nursery is on the second floor and our master is on the main floor of our house. We plan on keeping baby in our room in a cradle my parents used for me and my siblings and then a pack n play if needed until I'm ready for him to be moved upstairs... I don't see a problem with it as long as it is a safe environment for baby!

ETA: We also purchased video monitors so when the time does come for Nolan to be moved upstairs I can still "see" him!

I see no prob - other than being on different floors. I'd get a radon test done though. They are simple. https://www.epa.gov/radon/pubs/citguide.html

As a real estate agent in an area with lots of radon, I highly suggest having this done as well! Even if there's an existing mitigation system in, you should definitely have the levels tested if your babe is in there.
