Essential Oils

I am very new to the idea of using essential oils for anything other than freshening a room. Does anyone use essential oils? What ones are safe for babies? (I read an article that recommended NOT using essential oils with babies under 6 months?)

If it helps, I'm looking specifically at making a skin lotion, hopefully a calming, soothing scent like jasmine (my favorite!) And a rash cream to help with the teething monkey butt— this one recommended tea tree oil. I've also been told to add a bit of tea tree oil to my cloth diaper lotion?

Tell me what you use essential oils for and how? Bonus for any recipes I can save for later. TIA!

  • My favorite oil is lavender. I didn't start using them on DD1 until she was 2. That's me being a paranoid mom. It did help her sleep better for awhile and then it was like it just stopped working. Now, I use it on burns and it zaps the pain!

  • I am a huge fan of essential oils. As for using them on LO, I only use a blend that helps with digestive issues. I dilute it in coconut and/or olive oil. And rub on belly/feet. That's the only one I've used on LO.
  • Young Living makes therapeutic grade oils (I wouldn't trust anything else but therapeutic gradeoil) and there is a book on what is safe for babies called "gentle babies". It's a wonderful way to bring healing to a baby because we can't use a lot of OTC drugs with infants.
  • I have a friend who uses essential oils with both her kids. She has a two-year-old and a three-month-old. She uses the Young Living brand and swears by them. I haven't done much research myself but it seems to be working for her so I may get some in the next few weeks after looking at it more.
  • I love essential oils! I use doterra and wouldn't trust anything but that or Young Living. Lavender, melaleuca (tea tree), frankincense, roman chamomile are a few that are good for babies and safe
  • I add tea tree oil as a disinfectant to a tonne of homemade cleaning products. Laundry detergent for sanitizing cloth diapers, alcohol to spray on toys, dish soap and water for a counter clwaners etc.
  • I use lavender and lemon in coconut oil for diaper rash cream. I have also used lavender whenever she bumps her head. I reapply 2-3 times over an hour and she hasn't gotten a bump or bruise yet. If it's a really bad sleep night I diffuse peace and calming and that really seems to help. I use the young living band.

  • Look into Little Brown Sparrow Co. on Facebook (my sister recommended her). The owner is based in Florida (I think) and is a licensed aromatherapist. You'll see how inexpensive oils/blends actually are (versus the incredibly inflated rates of Young Living and DoTerra). Not trying to bash these companies, but if you research third party testing for these oils, then you'll see that many of them do not live up to their claims. Good luck!

  • Uh oh! We use a lot of CJ's BUTTer, and the one DH likes the best is the lavender and tea tree oil one.  All the cloth diaper moms always recommend CJ's, and I've never even thought about it being bad to use on him.  Now, I'm worried. :(

  • This is a typical parenting decision.  There's lots of conflicting information.  You have to do your own research and make the best decision for your family.  We have chosen to use them in our house, but in a very diluted form.
