Trouble TTC

Saline Ultrasound

Hi Friends! I just had my basic ultrasound and blood work today at my RE's office - I've had both of those done before, so I knew what to expect. Monday they will be doing a "Saline" or water ultrasound, which I've never heard of or done before. To those of you that have had this done, would you be willing to share some insight with me please? Should I take advil before? Does it cause cramping?

Thank you in advance :)

Re: Saline Ultrasound

  • Thank you, Narnia! I really appreciate it because I had no idea what to expect and they didn't tell me any of that (pain meds and pad.)
  • Loading the player...
  • I'd take something for the pain. It does cause cramping. For me it was worse than the HSG, but it may have just been the tech doing it.

They put a catheter in your cervix and fill your uterus with saline to try and better visualize any fibroids or other structural issues.

And take a heavy pad with you. You'll be leaking for awhile!

For me it was also more crampy than the HSG. Highly recommend taking Advil before (I would do 600mg as long as you have no intolerance to anti inflammatory meds). On the plus side (like the HSG) you get the advantage of getting instant results and talking about them with your Dr.

May 2014 - Break cycle to repeat saline sonogram and re-group.  Travel to Kauai 5/7-5/12 (Yay!!)
    June 2014 - Clomid 150mg CD4-8.  HCG shot CD14.  IUI#2 done on 6/9 and 6/10 (CD15-16) w/ Prometrium suppositories during TWW .... BFN
    July 2014 - Clomid 150mg CD3-7.  Ultrasound CD12 - 4 mature follies! HCG trigger shot CD12 AM.  IUI#3 on CD13 w/ Prometrium suppositories during TWW ....BFN
July 2014 - Repeat ultrasound done to measure size of fibroid - 8x9cm (the size of a grapefruit!) Surgery referral made.
August 2014 - MRI done which revealed 2 fibroids: a 13x15cm fibroid as well as an 8x7cm one.  Super freak out mode over surgery plan.  OB-GYN/surgeon said surgery would most likely have to be a laparotomy (open abdominal surgery)
August 2014 - After a 2nd opinion, plan to take Lupron x 2 months to shrink fibroids then laparoscopic/robotic myomectomy.  Surgery date is set for Nov 21st!
November 2014 - Robotic myomectomy done (2 large fibroids removed, mild endo found).  Benched x 3 months

  • Thank you, everyone!!
  • I've had 3 and haven't experienced any pain, only leaking of fluid after.
For me, it didn't feel any worse or uncomfortable than a pap

  • I just had that procedure about a month and a half ago. It was pretty easy... less uncomfortable than the HSG, which wasn't too bad for me either. Maybe take some ibuprofin ahead of time just in case. Oh and beware that when you stand up afterwards, you will leak! A lot! Bring a pad or liner. Good luck!

  • My RE had me take 4 Advil an hour before the saline sono and gave me a Valium 30 mins before. It hurt when he was trying to get a better look at the fibroid but it was quick. And it was great to have the results as he was seeing them. Good luck!

  • I had the same experience as @supermorena. It was a lot less pressure than my hsg test. In fact, I liked it a lot better than the hsg. Take tylenol or advil before, and bring a pantie liner or pad for after in case they don't give you one. Best of luck to you on the exam.
