Tailbone Pain

I'm not trying to rub this in but up to this point I've had no complaints about pregnancy except for the stones and UTI a few weeks ago. I feel so sorry for all you ladies that have been dealing with aches and pains but I think I'm there now. To put it bluntly...my butt hurts. More specifically, my tailbone. It's so tender. Any movement or change in position is horrible. Is anyone else experiencing this? If so, what can I do to relieve the pain?

Re: Tailbone Pain

  • Is it sciatic pain? Try to change up positions more frequently.

  • No. Its not sciatic pain. This is just in my tailbone. And the longer I sit the more it starts to hurt in my hips as well.
  • Unfortunately I have this too but nothing seems to help it. Sitting too long is terrible so I try to sit for 20 mins then stand for 20 and so on.
  • I just had this start up too the other day. I have had it really easy so far too so I didn't even bother saying anything about it since it didn't seem like a valid complaint. I started yoga the other day it has helped a bit. Try to stretch out what you can and then maybe try a heating pad. It seems to have helped me some.
  • Yes, I've had this off and on.  Unfortunately, my chair at work seems to cause it most of the time, and I have no idea what makes it go away.  Maybe if it comes back and doesn't go away I'll invest in some kind of donut cushion.

Exercise seems to help (walking and stretching is about all I do).

  • With my first pregnancy I had terrible back/tailbone pain. And sadly he is 1 year old and the pain is still there! I bruised it during delivery so that didn't help matters. Hopefully it diminishes for you!
  • I'm not having tailbone pain but I am having "lightning hip". Baby kicks near my hip and he must be hitting a nerve as I feel a sharp pain like lightning crotch down my leg.

I'm sorry you're having any back pain. I have sciatia problems and it's no fun!!
  • I think I just irritated it today. It's been mild to this point But I was on the road for about 4 hours today along with being in a 5 hour meeting. It was unbearable by the time I got home. I think I'm going to get back into my yoga but have to find some prenatal yoga. I don't think I can do most of the poses from my original workout anymore. Moving is the last thing I want to do when I'm in This kind of pain though. I just want to go cuddle my pillows and crawl into a hole!
  • @RHoPA1109‌ I think I'm with you on the never feeling better. I know there's an end to this but today just sucked! I had one of those hot flash-nearly pass out episodes in front of a client twice today on top of the boodahoncus pain. And it was pointed out to me that I've started waddling. Oh the joys of being pregnant!
  • Yes yes and yes. I saw my PT today for my herniated discs/sciatica and he said that now is the point when joints that aren't REALLY "moving" joints start to shift because of relaxin. So I'm chalking all my aches and pains to that
  • I would go to a chiropractor. I was having a lot of pain and it turned out that my secrum was twisted. It happened when I was in labor with my first and worsened when my ligaments got softer due to pregnancy hormones. You won't believe the world of difference a chiropractor makes.
  • I am suffering from this pain in the butt (pun intended) as well. I don't know how to make it better. I just change my position until I get some relief. Sometimes that is easier than others.
  • This is gonna sound weird but when my tailbone hurts, I spread my legs as wide as I can and lean forward, so belly can go between my legs. I stay like that as long as I can, it helps relieve the pressure.

I do the same. Tailbone pain is the worst. I started experiencing this around 14 weeks, and it won't go away. It makes everyday tasks very uncomfortable.
My doctor said that my pelvis is misaligned, and my pelvic floor muscles are part of the problem.
I hope you find some comfort this last trimester! Hang in there. You're not alone in this random body ache.
  • Daily yoga and chiropractic visits have been the only thing that help me deal with the pain.
  • I sit on a yoga ball and it helps sometimes? It really flares up when I sit for long periods of time :(
  • Yes!  I've had this since first trimester and is really one of the only pregnancy aches I've had so far.  I notice it most when I roll over at night to switch sides and basically the only thing I can do to make it better is just switch positions.  I'm glad someone posted this because I've never seen it in a list of normal pregnancy symptoms before and thought I was some sort of mutant.
  • Agree with PPs that have suggested chiropractic care... it's the only thing that's given me any sort of relief.

  • I've had similar pains in the tailbone area and lower back, and I was told that the loosening of the ligaments around the sacroiliac joint is causing a lot of my discomfort. I ordered a sacroiliac belt, which velcros snugly just below your hip bones, and compresses the joint back into its original position, or at least close to it. It reduced my sciatica pain and alleviates some of my lower back pain. It may not be the same as your situation, but it may overlap to help you out a little. I got the belt on Amazon for about $35.

  • @pmorenow‌ Thanks! I'll see if that works!
  • Serola New Sacroiliac Belt Medium (34"- 40" ) - this is how mine was listed on Amazon...

  • I've had pain like that too, it's just random and shooting. It's there for an instant and then gone. It catches me off guard all the time because I have yet to associate it with any particular movement. I'm trying the stretching and exercising route so far. It seems to be worse at work where I'm on my feet nearly all day.
  • I have been struggling with this discomfort for quite some time. I met with the Ergo team at my work and they suggested a seat cushion as well as moving around more often during the day to alleviate. I have used the cushion for a few weeks now and I do believe it has helped. The seat cushion is $35 on Amazon and here is the name if anyone is interested 'Aylio Coccyx Orthopedic Comfort Foam Seat Cushion (Gray)'. Good luck! I hope you get some relief soon.
