Zantac Mamas

LO has been showing signs of reflux for a few weeks now but I've been putting it off hoping I could wait until his apt on 01/07.. Well he's just been miserable the past few days so I called the pediatrician today and spoke to the nurse. She said it definetly sounds like reflux and called in Zantac for us. She said to take it twice a day.

Those of you who have started it- how are you doing it. Before eating, after eating? And how long did it take before you noticed an improvement? We have a follow up for his 2month check up on Wednesday and the nurse said he should be doing better by then?

So ready for my baby to feel better! :(

  • Thanks! I'm hoping it works quickly!

  • We've been on Zantac for awhile now.  I think since Dec 1st...  We saw positive results immediately though I hear that is rare.  Pedi told us to give it 30 minutes before but she will not take it straight.  We tried the dropper.  We tried using a nipple.  We tried 5 ml of breast milk.  She doesn't fall for any of it.  Because of this we just mix it in her bottle (or if I am feeding we put a minimum of a half oz of breastmilk or formula in with it).  She will take it then.  So, although before is ideal, we are seeing good results with her taking it during the feeding so we are fine with it.

  • We saw results almost immediately. We were instructed to do it twice a day, which we did for a few days, and then dropped to just in the evening. I give it to her right before her last feed of the night, squirting in 0.1 ml at a time with a syringe. She takes 1 ml but she was also on the big side when they prescribed it (11 lbs at 5 weeks, she's now 14 lbs at 9 weeks). It was mint flavored when we got it and that really bothered her so I took it back and the pharmacist reflavored it with grape. It helped a little but not much.

  • We saw some improvements the next day. She still has a little trouble (it's only been about a week), but she does great when she gets the full dose. I give it to her right before she eats... maybe I should start waiting a little longer, but she doesn't like it one bit so I feel a little better giving her a boob chaser :stuck_out_tongue:
  • We noticed improvement after about 4-5 days and we're specifically instructed to give it 15 mins before feeding.

  • We give 1 ml twice a day...she's probably around 9 lbs now. I thought I noticed a difference the first day (the day before yesterday) but yesterday she was fussy all day. What I've noticed the most is how drowsy it makes her. I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed that.

  • I give it to her the 2nd and last feeding of tje day. Took just a few days to see results. Good luck!!

  • Zantac didn't work for our LO but Im beginning to think it is gas not reflux. The best way I found to give the medication is to put it in a nipple. Our little one sucked the medication down before realizing it wasn't formula. Our nurse told us to mix it w/ water but our LO refused to take it because the medicine tasted bad. Hope this helps!
  • L has been on Zantac since the 15th. We saw resukts within 4-5 days. He takes .8 ml 3 times a day. I am EBF so I let him eat on one side, buro him then I give him .4. Then once he is done eating on the other I give him the remaining. I do this bc he can sometimes be a bit of a puker.

My LO has reflux, but is a "happy spitter" at this point.

My dd1 had severe GER and was on Prilosec from 4 weeks, and then started Zantac at 12 weeks, I think. So she was on both. She continued spitting up large volumes until 6-7 months, and was weaned off both meds by 8 months. Since she gained weight well (practically nursed every hour to compensate what she'd lose when spitting up) she didn't need Reglan or Domperidone.

Dd2 had mild-moderate GER and was on Zantac starting at 3 weeks until 5 months.

They both did well on the meds. It took a few days before noticing improvement.
