Cloth Diapering

Silly newb logistical questions that probably should be obvious.

Okay bear with me, I've now prepped my diapers and have questions. I'm sure I'm over thinking all of this. Keep in mind I've never actually put a cloth diaper on a baby before, so...yeah.

1. Washing wet bags/pail liners - these are still soaked when they came out of the wash because water got trapped inside. Do you still hang dry them? They are taking forever and are literally dripping wet out of the washer.

2. Usually when I've change disposable diapers, you take off the used one, and bundle them all up by sticking the tabs closed again. What do you do with cloth? Keep the diapers open when you throw them in the pail? Close them up and then open the snaps/Velcro before washing?

3. How long does it typically take your AIOs to hang dry? I have a few NB simplex and newborn Tots Bots, and I knew the dry time was a downside of AIOs but wow. They take forever. And the inserts hang down and dry all weird and curl up and then don't really lay flat when I stuff them back in the diaper. I'm assuming this is NBD when you actually put the diaper on? Or do they bunch up weird for you?

Thanks guys. Really.

  • I dump out the water in my pail liners and hang on an octopus hanging thing from a second shower curtain rod I installed over my tub above the shower (since it's above the shower it's out of the way and doesn't interfere with showering - sometimes I do stand on the edge of the tub but since mine is wider it's nbd). I check my pail liner and covers after a couple hours and if not dry I rotate them (turn pail liner inside out from how it was hanging) Diapers wash better when open so just fasten laundry tabs (don't need to undo rise snaps) and toss into wet bag or pail. If you roll a poopy one up while out and about, just open before putting in pail. I don't use AIOs so no experience/advice there.

  • Okay, thanks. That helps a lot. I think I'll use the dryer for both the pail liners and AIOs, at least for a little bit. Thanks for the help.

  • 1. I throw my pail liners (PW) in the dryer on low or medium. I dump out the water, invert it (inside out) over the agitator in my top-loader while I dry my diapers and inserts, then throw it in the dryer inside out for a quick 15 min tumble.  Then I hang it on the rack (right side out) with the rest of my diapers that didn't finish in the dryer.  Using the dryer probably reduces their useful life, but you have to balance cost of replacing it early vs. your time and convenience.

    2. I unstuff the pockets, peel the fleece liners off the prefolds (we use them because of wetness sensitivity), and stick down the laundry tabs, but that's about it.

    3. I had 3 NB AIOs.  I dried them on medium for about 40 min then hung them to dry.  They took forever, which is why I didn't buy any more for my OS stash.  Hated them.

  • Dry on low (or possibly medium?)  Don't dry on "hot" or you'll mess up the elastic really quickly.
Now that it's winter, I tumble dry everything (on low).  Usually the prefolds are still a bit damp, so I hang those up indoors overnight and they're dry by morning.
If we didn't have a tumble dryer, I would hang everything indoors.  Pockets and the flats we use to stuff them usually dry overnight, the totsbots AIOs and prefolds would probably take closer to 24-36 hours.
  • @PipSqueak0313‌ I need a picture of this drying rack! I like the idea but I'm really confused how it works.

Here is a quick photo.....I usually have the hanging rack at the end farthest from the shower head though.
