Pregnant after 35

(TMI warning). Suggestions?

I debated putting this in my update because it's just gross but I am dying ladies and i need some suggestions!  I am so constipated and it's killing me!  I was able to go yesterday but not very much and it took me forever.  Today my stomach is painful and I just am so uncomfortable!  Anything I can do that really helps? My BFF suggested getting laxatives or an enema. I really really do not want to give myself an enema!  But I also don't want to continue to be this uncomfortable. I can't sit still and I'm hungry but I'm afraid to eat too much. Ugh. I never got this way with either of my previous pregnancies.

Re: (TMI warning). Suggestions?

  •  Work with your care providers, certainly.  It depends on your body and how you feel, but for me - it's why I drink a cup of coffee every day.  For me, coffee helps keep me regular and that is pretty important to my health and how I feel.  Not being regular for me causes far more problems than worrying about one cup of coffee.

  • I agree with pp - check with your provider.  Mine has okayed Colace.  What I have been doing since my first tri though is having 3 - 5 dried prunes a day - keeps me nice and regular - and don't taste gross like prune juice.  Also I have on occasion had a glass of Metamucil - which also worked.  But again - check with your Dr/Nurses to see what they advise,

    Good luck!

  • I wish I liked coffee. maybe it would be worth a shot. My BFF also said coffee helps her.

I was thinking about stopping and grabbing some suppositories on the way home and then talking to my OB on Monday about colace.  This is the first time this has happened to me since I've been pregnant and it's so uncomfortable!

    Thank you for your responses!

  • I'd talk to your doc before doing anything like a suppository or enema. I had good luck with adding in extra fiber chews.

I need immediate relief though.  I mean I am literally in pain. I cannot wait.  My doctor's office is closed for the holiday.. they won't be back until Monday.

  • Yay! I was able to reach the nurse midwife at my doctor's office. I thought they were closed. She said that you can do suppositories but that they can cause you to cramp so she said to try prune juice.. like half a cup slightly warmed up and she said that usually helps pretty quickly.  I'll try that.

Thank you again ladies. Hopefully this is a short lived problem!

  • I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I had SEVERE constipation in first tri with my last pregnancy. No matter what I tried I just couldn't beat it until I finally settled into second tri. I won't even tell you my tmi what I had to do on more than one occasion to get it out.

Here is my advice. You can try colace, it works for some people, it didn't work for me. Pay very close attention to your diet and don't eat anything that is going to contribute. Eat lots of high fiber foods. I started eating very high fiber cereals for breakfast and that helped. Prune juice is gross but it does help. It's safe to use a dulcolax suppository but I'll warn you the cramping is awful. Drink tons and tons of water and try not to be sedentary. Pineapple juice may help some but not as much as prune. And like everyone else said, check with your dr. Miralax may be ok for you, didn't work more than once for me. Some people try milk of magnesia but check with your dr first. And that can cause cramping too.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know. Good luck, I really hope you can get on top of it!!

Certain types of laxatives can cause miscarriages.  I would at least ask the pharmacist.  Hope you get some relief soon.

ETA: Sorry, didn't see your last post
  • Early in my pregnancy I suffered from this, as well.  Going a week!!  I am a chronic IBS sufferer, so ingesting any laxatives or even other aids  stool softeners, etc) scared me. Even tho the doc said they were ok, I know how my body reacts to things.

Eventually what worked for me was Hot Chocolate.  I read that warm fluids help get things moving, which is why people swear by coffee.  I can't stand the taste of coffee, so I tried hot chocolate and it worked.

So my suggestion is to drink something hot/warm.  HTH!  Good luck...I know the misery you're in and it sucks!!

For the future, I have a cup of coffee in the morning and a berry smoothie in the afternoon every day. Both are necessary for me for keeping things moving.

  • If you're already really backed up you may have to do another round before you see a difference. Keep the fluids going and try another one in the morning. Try to eat raisin bran or some other high fiber cereal for breakfast right after. Fx for you, I hope it works! If not it's probably time for some serious help unless you want to try coffee.

  • I found that drinking three or four glasses of water and taking a magnesium supplement daily really helps. Also I saw someone else recommended breakfast cereal that helped me too.  The laxatives were always a little too strong.
  • @niknak1208 I totally hear you - this was me for a while. I was eating tons of fiber, including prunes, vegetables, you name it, and drinking lots of liquids. Those things are important, i.e. you should not skip them; however, they weren't enough for me. Finally, my OB said Colace was fine. Now I take two per week (they take up to two days to work through your system), in addition to eating well and staying hydrated, and I feel SO MUCH better. I hope it works for you too. There is also a generic version at CVS that is basically identical, sold under its chemical name - docusate sodium.
  • I'm so glad you got some relief! I hope that combination will continue to work for you. Lots of places make a generic colace now, I've gotten it from both Target and Publix. FX it will do the trick, I took 3 a day and still suffered horribly. Good luck!!

  • I hope it never happens again. It was horrible!! I thought I was going to have to have the hospital help me! I was so nervous about it being impacted. I didn't realize how backed up I was! I am so glad that's over.

I drink lots of water but probably not as awesome about fiber. Trust me-when I got up this morning I thought twice about my choices!!

  • I had a lot of problems with this when I was taking Zofran.  I found that the constipation wasn't worth it so stopped taking it.  I'd rather vomit.

Also, I had to stop taking vitamins with Iron in it.  That caused me a lot of constipation problems also.

  • I thought it was the zofran making me so constipated but I think it's just me. I usually suffer IBS-D so thus has been weird. I'm taking colace and magnesium for migraines. It's works a little bit but it's more that I get a little bit out sometimes then every other day or so I have a good movement, if I don't gave one tomorrow I'll try the prune juice.

  • Foods that help me are...bran flakes, dried prunes (much better than the juice, but probably does not work as well) dried apricots, beans, (black, northern, ext.) apple juice, coffee, OJ and frosted mini wheats. I try and eat a combo of this stuff every day and drink lots of water. A bowl of the mini wheats at night and the next morning I am good to go. Lol!
