United vs #UnitedWithIvy

The parents are the jerks here. How are you going to buy yourself a first class seat and buy your disabled child an economy seat and then launch a campaign against the airline because they are enforcing federal guidelines?!? If they'd bought three seats together, this would have been a non-issue.

I don't disagree about a child safety seat, however.  But not knowing the specifics of the child's abilities, I can't get up in arms regarding their choice to not use it.

  • They bought the third ticket for procedure.  She sits on their lap as an infant would (she's the size of a one year old).  But they are required to purchase a ticket for her as if she were actually using a seat (that she wouldn't be using).

    They have done this before.

FFS.  Did people really read that and think they were stashing her in coach while they shipped their mimosas in first?

The guidelines are pretty clear that she needs a seat of her own, regardless of her size. If she isn't able to sit on her own, they should have brought a safety seat or consulted the airline in advance. If the seats had been together, then parents could have held the little girl up between them.

Sorry but "we've gotten away with it in the past" is not an excuse.

  • I'm not disagreeing with the comments you quoted @-auntie-‌ regarding adaptive equipment and safety.

I was adding in key piece the original article lacked.

  • Like, honestly, I'm taken aback on the tone of the OP here with the focus on buying themselves first class seats and her an economy one. Obviously, they wanted a cheap seat for her because they weren't using it and a bigger one for them so they could hold her.

All else aside, and fair arguments on what should have been done here, they weren't looking to dump their special needs child in steerage while they dined on steak and lobster in first class.

Re-read my first post...they were trying to buck the system instead of buying three seats together. There was NO mention of the parents dumping their kid in the back so they could fly alone.

  • The linked article came off that way and leaked into how I read your post.
  • I take offense at the notion that the parents should not travel with their child because of her level of ability.

I don't go into personal detail regarding this but suffice it to say I am intimately familair with similar circumstances. It is VERY important to some families to incorporate their severe/profound child into as much as possible. It's horrible when people make comments about how they should have left them at home.

Yeah, that is crappy. That was the article, though, not here, right?

Yes. I'd throw down if it was said here.
