LO not liking solid foods

Ds1 loved everything we fed him and had no issues transitioning to solid foods. He always ate what we ate. DS2 is another story. He may play with some solid foods in his mouth but doesn't swallow it or won't open his mouth at all. The only think I have found he likes is puffs and pancakes. I haven't been that hard core with him in offering foods since our schedules are crazy and I feel like he is getting lost in the shuffle. Anyone else's 9 month old indifferent about solid foods?

Maybe it's a texture thing? Did you try purees or just go straight to "normal" food?

ETA just thinking that maybe the normal food is just a big texture difference from formula, so maybe purees would be a good middle ground.

  • We've been having a hard time with it too. LO hates solid foods. We've had to just try a variety of stage 3 foods, and also table foods and find foods he likes to get him to eat them. Otherwise, he gags and won't eat them. Just keep trying different foods!
  • Same here. E won't eat anything with texture so I'm still offerings purées. She has been pretty picky about which ones she will eat too. However, when I offer something she likes she eats it all and fast. I just keep offering new foods. She will eventually start eating.

    This.

Eta: at times I start stressing that he isn't eating enough solids, but then I remember that before one is "just play/practice.

  • J went on a puree strike at about 7 months. That's when we started giving finger foods. I don't know what was going on but now he's ok with being spoon fed again as long as finger foods are also offered. I have no idea why it started or why it resolved but it did, so have hope!

  • My LO loves vanilla Yobaby yogurt!
  • We had to mix apples with everything for a couple weeks because that was all LO would eat. She's definitely got a sweet tooth and won't eat veggies or meat straight up. I make sure to offer a lot of different things mixed with things she likes for now.

  • I'm glad I'm not alone. I found out DS2 love yogurt. He will eat level 2 and some level 3s purées. I just keep trying.

  • Our baby is a big fan of Earth Organics - maybe start with stage 1 and move through stage 3 to see if you can find what she likes, or make your own purees (kudos to those moms out there who do that, but I'm not one of them). Ours also really likes Yobaby yogurt - it's delicious if you want a snack too! He's not into cheerios or finger foods yet, he sort of pokes at them but doesn't eat them. Per our doctor and several pediatric dietician articles I've read, you have to offer foods 10-15 times for babies and toddlers to even try them. So I just keep putting the cheerios or other little foods on his tray while I'm feeding him to try and encourage exploration. I try not to offer too many foods, I try to stick with one food for at least 4-5 days before I move on. I don't want to overwhelm him with too many new things/flavors.
  • We're in a similar situation too and have had a hard time getting her on table foods.  She has been on and off with purees, refuses the bottle, and lately only wants puffs or Cheerios.  The pediatrician said it is it can happen as they try new foods.
