TTC after 35

New to board.. CD3 results (child mentioned)

Hello ladies... Let me first introduce myself. I'm 43, had my first son when I was 41.. DH and I waited, by choice, to try to start a family; we got married later in life, focused on careers, traveling etc etc. I never regretted the decision to wait until now. And, we were very lucky to conceive relatively quickly, on our own, the first time.

After having DS, I now worry that because I'm on the older side of mom, he might be all alone in the world some day and I'm leaning towards a 2nd child so he will have a sibling. I always thought I'd be ok with 1 child or even with none (if that's how life played out) so, I find myself in unchartered waters wanting TTC at 43! We have been trying for about 4 months and realizing that at my age I can't just sit around and hope, I scheduled an appt with an RE. After the initial blood work he gave me only 2 results, I'm sure he tested other things but these seemed to be the 2 he was most focused on.

FSH: 5.7
AMH: 1.4

He didn't necessarily comment if these #s are "good" or "bad", he just said everything is functioning as if I'm 43. He's recommending IVF as soon as we're ready and highly suggested DE. I'd really like to try with my own eggs but IVF isn't covered at all by our insurance. So we probably have only one shot.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for here, but it seems like many of you are very knowledgeable about all of this so I guess I just wanted to say "hello" and see if anyone had any thoughts or similar experiences?

  • Welcome! I don't know about the amh number without looking it up, but I know the fsh number is excellent. Like younger than 43 excellent. Did they do an ultra sound?
    me:41   dh:43
Off Mirena Nov 2013, On Nuvaring end of Jan, Back off Sept 2014.  Never ending cycle starting end of Sept...
    11/14 Provera failed... cycle continues
12/14 High FSH (57 "midcycle")  OBGYN had no clue... about anything
01/15 More lab results coming back from RE. U/S showed small (1")cyst on left ovary, thin lining, and couldn't locate right ovary so  possibly straight to DE and IVF

Occassionally mess with the chart below to see "what if" and learn (not to make it pretty but because FF stays drunk with me).

  • @vh2014‌ ... He did do an ultrasound as well as a FemVue and said everything looks normal. In retrospect, and after reading many posts on this board, I feel like I should have been asking more questions and asking for more detailed results. The ladies here seem to have far more info than I was given!!

    All welcome

  • Welcome! Your FSH looks good and it's an indicator of ovarian reserve, you want this # to be less than 9, AMH is an indicator of remaining follicles, 1.5-4.0 is considered "normal" so that being said your numbers look good, your RE is probably suggesting IVF due to AMA more than anything else. So the big question is this. If you only have one shot do you want to take a chance on 43 year old eggs? I ask myself this question a lot and know it's a hard one to answer. We are lucky in that we will have a chance to do IUI or IVF as often as needed but if I couldn't then I would probably be thinking harder about DE. I wish you the very best on this journey!

I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • Your numbers look great. FSH really needs to be tested along with estradiol (E2), though, because high estrogen can artificially lower FSH. I've gotten unusually low FSH (well out of my normal range) on cycles where my E2 was high.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Ladies,

I'm new to the site my husband and I have been TTC I have been using OPK however I was told last night charting and temp is the best way.. My Doc says OPK are fine please share your thoughts and maybe some insight on charting I'm on CD4.
    Thanks
  • don't have any experience or knowledge in the way of your numbers, but wanted to say welcome and good luck!

  • @Gigi504‌ OPKs are useful at predicting future ovulation, but charting and temping will confirm it happened. I did get pregnant just using OPKs the first time around, but my cycles changed after my miscarriage and I found it useful to know what's going on from a more scientific standpoint.

  • As has been indicated here, your numbers are normal for your age range. As for using your own egg, or a donor's, a DE is way way more expensive. Like around 3 times more expensive. Your OE for one shot is like $10-15k and DE (usually 6 shots) is $28-30k. You will have to do a lot more research, but a 43 year old egg is not out of the question. They have "shared risk" for DEs typically where if it doesn't work, you get your money back. BTW, my grandmother had my dad at 45 in 1941, as an anecdote.

I have a friend (43 in a month) who used IVF with her OE (got 5, 2 good ones, both put in, 1 made it and she's 10 weeks). Do a lot of research and a bunch of searches on the website and all over the place. I think over a bit of time, you will figure out which way you want to go. Trust your gut and figure out bank-account wise what you are willing to risk and whether you are completely good with the DE concept. I was given the DE speech (which is why I have researched it all) and a 2nd opinion never even went there at all.

  • Well.. going out on a limb here.  I am 42 and ttc (sort of) had my youngest at 41 after 13 cycles with no RE assistance.  I wish you well, first off and others have given you their experience and knowledge re you levels, so I will just say that dh and I are not in a position to use RE if we were to though, even just once we'd use my eggs.  I say that with respect and love, and my experience as the reason, meaning not to hurt anyone else.  I also say that as a women with other children, if roles/experiences were different I might choose a different path.
I wish you well no matter your decision.
  • Thanks to everyone for your welcoming comments and sharing your experiences.

I called the Dr today to request a full report of all of our results.  DH also had SA and was told everything is "normal" (he's almost 40).   I've thought about it a lot over the holidays and I just don't think the DE route is for me.  So today I called a few companies (recommended by the Dr) to get pricing on bundle packages for IVF.    I've sort or resolved myself to this being the last month for us to try on our own.... my last ditch effort is occurring this week with every single finger and toe crossed that somehow we are successful and we don't need to make the call at the end of this month to do IVF.  I guess only time will tell..

Thanks again for all of your thoughts!
