Carseat Canopy -- so cool!

On Christmas, m cousin brought over his newborn. When they came in, I noticed an adorable carseat blankie cover thing. Normally when you have your kids in a carseat when they are little, you throw a blanket over it when you transport them from place to place, and often the blanket falls off or becomes annoying to deal with. Well-- he found a solution, and I am so getting one, and wanted to share!
It's called a "Carseat Canopy". It's a cover that attaches to the handle of the seat by buttons, and the other side of it is a very soft blanket that you can also use for baby when traveling. They come in tons of colors, and also some NFL teams if you like that stuff.

What's even better is if you purchase something from Motherhood Maternity (online or in store, they give you a coupon for $50. And since they are only $49.95, you literally just pay the shipping. My biggest problem now is choosing a pattern!
@juneheart - Nice! It looks like right now they are all 40% off, and the shipping is free, so total cost is $24.95. Still-- free is good.

  • I ordered one months ago and just paid the shipping which was around $15.  The quality is good, one side is a minky material and the other cotton or something similar.

I registered for one at Target because I had read some things saying that website is actually kind of a scam. Like bad quality and silly expensive. If I don't get one I will probably make one. All you need is a small blanket with velcro straps attached to one side.
@deziniki - I felt the canopy and checked it out when he brought his baby in, and it was pretty thick and nice. Didn't realize Target had them, too.
  • Also, make sure you don't order the 5 piece set things that are available, those are not safe.

  • I already do this with my Aden and Anais blanket.  I cut four slits into it and use them to tie it to the top of my carrier or jogging stroller.  I also sometimes tie the two ends together around the back of the carrier, I remember it working well!  The slits freyed in the wash but it looks cute!
  • The canopy is good but the rest shouldn't be used since it's after market and hasn't been crash tested with your carseat. You should only use what comes with your carseat.

  • I made mine too. It's ridiculous hot in Texas so I made it with two lightweight fabrics. Also I already had the materials too so it was "free"
I was thinking of making a light weight one also.  I love minky, but it doesn't make much sense for the summer.  Was it easy to make?

  • The canopies are not to be used while driving. And, my credit card was stolen from that company when I got the promotion code when pregnant with my son. Then it fell apart the first trip through the washer.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I've never heard anything but terrible reviews about that company and their products. Just do your research before you blindly throw your money at them. Anyone that offers "free" products to all pregnant women, just pay shipping, sounds sketchy to me.
Interesting. I haven't bought one yet, but wanted to. I have gotten "free" baby slings and nursing covers, and they wash fine and are great. I will ask my cousin to see if he has had any problems yet.

@DawnLilly - Thanks. Good to know, and sorry you dealt with that mess.

And if I knew how to sew, I would make one myself!
  • I've got the grey one and only paid shipping. $14.95:

  • I had something that covered Hunters car sear, but it had elastic around the sides and a zipper. It also left a whole for the baby's face.

  • I sew, so I am totally making one like this since I think it is hilarious:

  • I hadn't really thought of the product being unsafe for a car seat, that makes a lot of sense.

I had simply thought, oh that's handy as hell when the kid pukes up all over the car seat, since those seat fabrics are not easy to get on and off to wash.

  • I made 2 of these for my SIL and I was trying to decide if it would be cheaper to get the free one and pay for shipping or just buy fabric and make my own. From what some of you ladies are saying about the free ones, I think I'll just stick to making my own. Plus, more fabric choices.
  • Wish I could sew one like some of the PPs mentioned! I've always loved the look of these, but I'm not sure the one from that website will work for me. I live in Louisiana and putting that thick of fabric on top of the carseat in the summer sounds like a pretty bad idea. I also HATEEEE paying for expensive shipping. I found this one from Target that I registered for instead. Looks like a thinner, breathable fabric. Hopefully this one will work better for 100 degree summers!

  • I live in oregon and they sell plastic ones here too ( it rains 3/4 of the year if not more).
  • I had the free one for dd1 and it was great. I used it all winter and summer. I just used it 1/2 way up in the summer bc it did a great job at blocking the sun. The canopy on my car seat was really short and did nothing. It was about $10 for shipping. It was good quality (double lining).

I did all 4 of the "free" things, each with around $10 in shipping. I used the nursing cover often when bf/pumping, especially when pumping at work (just in case someone walked in). The bobby is nowhere as nice as a true boppy but I still used it a ton. The big boppy was great for the couch, with little support around me. However, my glider is nice and puffy with high arms so it was nice to have a smaller boppy to fill in the gaps or just prop my arm a little. I never used the sling.

  • I'm glad the safety concerns have already been addressed. Anything that goes between the baby and the back of the seat can interfere with how the harness will restrain your baby in a crash. Same goes for the super popular BundleMe product.

  • I actually did not like the car seat canopy! I think it's difficult to pick up and carry the car seat with the way the fabric hangs.

I did love the JJ Cole car seat cover. It's safe, just hooks above the top of the car seat, not under baby! I think I paid $20 and was totally worth it!
