Starting Daycare

Has anyone else started daycare kind of later in LOs life? We're getting ready to start next week and I'm nervous. LO is pretty picky about how he naps during the day (usually on me) and I'm not sure how he'll do with other people.

Plus, he usually goes to bed late and sleeps in late, and he's going to have to be woken up super early to go to daycare. I'm going to put him to bed early everyday the rest of this week, so we'll see how it goes. I know I should've started transitioning him earlier, but reality hadn't set in that I would be getting up at 5:30 so I was trying to avoid it for myself as much as for him.
Any advice on starting daycare or getting him to sleep earlier is welcome!

Re: Starting Daycare

  • The hardest thing for me is that LO doesn't always do well with naps at school. They will just have to learn as the time goes how to take a nap at school. LO has really good naps when home in his crib, but at school not soo much. Your LO will be very tired and hopefully start going to bed earlier since he will be playing and interacting with other kids more.

  • We're not in daycare yet but I asked this of our prospective daycares as LO is a three nap a day baby. She said that it's usually a little rough the first week but they get into the routine of the daycare in regards to naptime. She was also said that if LO needed a blip of a nap she would hold her so she got it. Probably not the same as every daycare but that's the answer I received.

As for getting him to sleep earlier I heard that you should start by waking them earlier and then adjust the schedule for bedtime by 15 minute intervals when they start to get tired earlier? I think I read it in a book. No real experience just some info I found.

    Good luck!
  • DS1 started daycare (in home with 3-4 other kids under 4) when he was 10 months. Up to that point he was up at 7-8am, one nap a day, bed at 10-11pm.
Once he was going to daycare (2-3 days a week) he only slightly adjusted. Up at 5:30-6 for daycare drop off 6-6:30, either naps at 11 and 2 or one longer at 1pm, then bed 9-10pm.

LO will be starting just before 11 months I expect. I haven't really looked for Childcare yet, but I go back to work just before his birthday.
We will let him adjust as necessary, although he already gets up and goes to bed earlier than DS1.
