Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Fighting sleep hard at 3 mos

My DS is 14 wks tomorrow and is giving me a crazy hard time going to sleep. He just spent over 3.5 hrs awake this morning (!) because I couldn't get him to nap. He still needs to be swaddled because he startles and also shoves his hands in his mouth, both of which wake him. But he screams when I swaddle in anything - and we have all kinds of swaddles. I wind up having to nurse him multiple times to get him to finally sleep. I can't take all the pre-nap screaming and have played with various awake times but nothing works. How long is this phase going to last?!? If this is 3 mos, I'm pretty scared of the 4-mo wakeful.

Re: Fighting sleep hard at 3 mos

  • Hi,  my EN is 15 wks and was giving us a hard time going down for naps and night sleep as well for a couple of weeks.. Literally just these last couple of weeks.  I know that him being able to suck on his fist was paramount in allowing him to self-sooth.  Babies do that commonly.  He is now sucking his thumb which he found after a while of fist sucking.
Are you doing a nap or nighttime routine?  We have been sticking with a routine and then making sure we put him down when awake.  We help him self sooth by giving him his fist to suck on and he is now finding it on his own and only fusses a little before sucking on his thumb and falling asleep.
Good luck and know that it will pass.. just stay consistent and they always learn and move on:)

  • My DS used to be able to soothe himself before naps and bedtime...until 4 months. Now, I gets ultra-grouchy and picks fights with his own sleepiness. I end up having to either rock or bounce him to sleep. Although he's now 5 months and it's slightly, very slightly, getting a bit better. I am hoping that he'll return to his self-soothing ways.

The other thing I found is that his naps are more shorter now at 5 months compared to before. He'll nap for like 30 mins and then wake up. Anyone here experience this too?
  • I'm in the exact same boat here.  My DS is 15 weeks and we're on at least the second week of fighting sleep/not sleeping..  Yesterday he only slept about 9 hours total and would not go down for a nap.  I'm exhausted and don't know how to get him to sleep.  When we put him down he just cries and cries.

My DD will not nap at all unless she's super full. Sometimes she'll seem like she's asleep, then pop her eyes open and be frantic for the bottle.
My 3mo DD is also exactly like this. She gets very sleepy while feeding, but when I take the bottle off she is instantly wide awake with panic. Today she screamed at me and wouldn't go down but was obviously sleepy and refusing the bottle. It turned out she had some gas so once she got the burp out she wanted a few more ounces to top herself up.
