AW: 1 hr glucose test

I had to take my glucose test early, (16w5d) and failed with a number of 148. Womp! Now I have to do the 3hr test on Monday and am legitimately concerned I'm not going to be able to finish it without getting really ill. I can't go more than a couple hours without eating without getting sick, and have always been super sensitive to sugar so an empty stomach +glucola....

Essentially- whine whine, wah wah

Has anyone else had to do the GTT early? My search of the board didn't pull anything up... if so, come! Commiserate with me!

Re: AW: 1 hr glucose test

  • I haven't done mine yet but with DS I failed the one hr and had to do the three hr.. It sucked so bad! I feel ya. That stuff is disgusting!! And I think it's worse that it's cold! Mine was always coke flavored! Barf! With both my babies. My friend had orange. Not sure if it's better but sounds better then nasty old cold pop!! Hopefully you don't throw it up!

  • I just took the one hour test. Was extremely nauseous, had a headache, very dizzy and light headed. I had to lay down. I almost passed out and nearly asked my husband to come get me because I didn't think I could drive. I honestly don't know what I'll do if I fail and have to do the three hour one.

Hoping your testing goes well! Maybe talk with your doctor/midwife and see if they have any recommendations.
  • I had to take my test in like week 10, family history of diabetes.
Failed the 1hour, passed 3/4 portions of the 3hour.
    Conclusion Insulin resistant
    I also have PCOS.

I felt terrible after the 3 hr test, woozey and lightheaded, I had to sit down in my car and just pause for a really long time. Be sure to bring some snacks for after the test, that would've probably helped.

    Good luck!

I'm 31 with PCOS and He's 30 with no issues.

  • I agree with snacks after the test.  I had DH set up a bowl of cereal and have it all ready for me when I got home from the test.  I was starting to get really woozy on the way home (according to the doc my blood sugar dropped to 56 after the 3 hr).  I didn't finish the 3 hr test with my son I got sick after the 1st blood draw.  They had me follow the diet but I didn't have to prick my fingers, and he's the reason they had me take it early this time around because he was 10# and I didn't finish the test.  So far the diet really isn't bad at all so its worth following.

  • Haven't done mine yet for this one but I remember it from 5 yrs ago. I'm dreading it. Ewwwww....
  • There are a few of us GD moms here :) put "GD" in the search and it should pull up a few more posts for you so that you can get the most of what has been discussed as well as your thread here.

It's no fun, but it's workable! And we are all here for each other to vent and trade recipes and thoughts. The three hour test sucks and you just have to soldier through it. I didn't do so bad as far as reaction this time around (even though my numbers bombed). My first pregnancy I passed out when I stood up to get my last blood draw done.

Hopefully you will pass but if you don't, don't despair! You can do this.

P.S. Aside from all my positivity, I. Just. Want. Some. Fucking. Cake. Lots of it.
  • I've had 3 pregnancies with GD. my first I failed the 1 hour at 149 and did the 3 hour and failed miserably. 2nd time I failed my 1 hour and just decided to do the diet and take my sugars as they'd like. This is the only pregnancy they've tested me early, and when I failed my 1 hour, I decided not to waste time and money doing the 3 hour. My OB is fine with it as long as I track my numbers etc.

  • I have to do mine this week at 16 weeks. All I can remember is that it was the worst part of my first pregnancy! :-(

  • I had to take the 1 hr and 3 hr with DS and failed misreably. If I had known my 1 hr numbers I wouldn't have even bothered with the 3 hr. Had to take the 1 hr at week 8 due to the past history and passed with flying colors.

I'll take the 1 hr again at about 28 weeks I think is when my OB does it and I'll find out my numbers this time before I go through with the 3hr. I haven't had a woozey or other reaction other than the stuff tastes horrible and all I want to do is brush my teeth after I take it.

GL! Having GD sucks, but knowing about it is better than not, and if you have it you have it, there is no way to "trick" and pass the test, and you wouldn't want that anyway.

  • I did the 3 hour at 12 weeks because my son was 10.5 pounds and they were worried I had Gd with him and didn't know (I passed the 3 hour with him) I passed no problem. I'll have to do it again at 24 weeks because they still think that must be why he's was so big. Finally at my last appt my midwife said maybe you just had a big baby..... Anyway I'm watching my sugar intake this pregnancy just incase because I would like to have a regular sized baby this time lol.

The test isn't too bad. The stuff tastes awful and you have to chug it. Bring lots of things to do. Books knitting etc. it's boring and they don't like you to leave the waiting room.
  • I had to take it around week 9 due to family history of type 2 and failed my one hour with a 137.  I took the three hour the next week and failed it by just a few numbers.  It was miserable and my blood sugar crashed to a 56 by the end and I almost passed out.  I swear to God this diagnosis has been the biggest crock of shit and the biggest pain in the ass ever.  I have been amazingly good on my diet, lost 10 pounds, and have gained back only 4 so for my entire pregnancy I have a net loss of 6 pounds.  They have poked me and prodded me, made me catch all of my urine for 24 hours, told me I probably already had diabetes before I was pregnant (which according to my tests in May I didn't have it then!).  They put me on glyburide at night because my AM numbers ranged from 80-99 although mostly below 95.  The lowest dose of glyburide made me crash to a whopping 39 in the middle of the night and I'm lucky I managed to get out of bed and test my sugar before a seizure started.  I tried to call for my husband but I couldn't speak so I ran to the fridge and started eating ice cream as fast as possible.  Luckily my perinatal doc told my regular doc that I shouldn't be taking glyburide at night because it causes hypoglycemia.  Oh, just FYI it is a class C drug and makes your pancreas work overtime thus increasing your chances of developing type 2 later in life.  So now I'm on the lowest dose of metformin and I still have completely normal numbers all day long with slightly elevated AM numbers, but I think it is helping a little with my AM numbers.

Here is the craziest part.  For Christmas I figured screw it, I'm eating what I want and I will test and see what happens.  If my sugar gets really high I'll walk or something and be good for the rest of the day.  Well the more carbs I eat the better my sugar is.  It makes no sense for someone with diabetes, but it does make sense for someone who is hypoglycemic, which I am and they didn't seem to think was important.  So since Christmas I've been eating normally and all of my numbers are great.  I'm still taking metformin but I've been taking that for over a month so I don't know if it suddenly started working or not.

The last interesting little tidbit I've found is that the numbers to determine a pregnant woman has gestational diabetes are based on the fact that we have so much more blood later in pregnancy so our blood sugar is diluted, therefore a fasting blood sugar of 96 is fine for a non-pregnant person, but too high for us because it is high on average for pregnant women later in their pregnancy.  BUT, if they are testing you early and they base whether or not you pass or fail on these pregnancy numbers rather than on some modified formula then I don't see how that can be accurate.  I've actually come to the conclusion that I personally have sort of screwed up blood sugar, but not diabetes.  I wonder if I was off the metformin and did the glucose test at 28 weeks if I would be diagnosed with GD or not.  I'm not going to press that issue because metformin is a Class B drug and I like seeing the high risk doctor, but if I could go back I would not have submitted to all of those expensive tests for such borderline numbers.

So, anyway it is a complicated subject that I'm not convinced the Doctors totally understand.  It sounds like you are hypoglycemic as well so I just wanted to warn you that at least my doctor doesn't seem to understand how that all plays into this stuff.  Make sure you eat 250 to 300 carbs a day for a few days before the test, and drink water if you want to during the test.  If you feel really bad in the last hour tell someone so you don't pass out or something.  I took some fruit with me and I still can't believe I made it out of there without fainting.  I felt awful for the rest of the day.  DO NOT go low carb before the test.  That can increase insulin resistance and make you have higher numbers on the day of the test which won't accurately represent where your blood sugar is as a whole.

All in all it is totally manageable just make sure you advocate for yourself and be really careful if they want to put you on glyburide at night.  That stuff is very dangerous for a hypoglycemic person in my opinion (and in my perinatal doc's opinion).  Sorry for the really freaking long post!  This has been a real battle for me and sapped a lot of the joy out of this whole experience.  Don't let that happen to you.  If you are diagnosed you will get closer attention and more frequent ultrasounds so it really isn't all bad.

  • Oh man. It's nice to feel like I am not alone in this but now I'm pretty convinced I'm doomed for the 3hr! Lol

I have PCOS and am already diagnosed insulin resistant (my ob knows this. That's why I'm testing early) so it sounds like my odds aren't good for an easy/uneventful test. Womp.

I will definitely make sure to bring snacks with me for after. I didn't even think about that, but it's a genius idea!

I don't mind having to go on the gd diet, especially to keep baby healthy! So I'd almost rather do that and finger pricks than the 3hr.

  • Yup. I failed my 3hr. My fasting was 96 (cut off of 95) and my 1hr was 210 (cut off of 180!)

And now I have a killer headache that I am going to treat by hunting for a GD board on here somewhere. lol

  • @beattykid in regards to your post. My mother had huge babies 8-14 and 10-14 so I asked to be tested earlier and my dr refused. So I believe your legit in saying the numbers are different later in pregnancy.
  • I failed the one hour and just did the 3hr last Friday..it was as horrible as expected. I debated not doing it but figured it was best for the baby...When I left there, I felt I was gonna pass out while driving...I got home after stopping at Arbys and felt really really bad...Sweating cold sweats and shaking...So glad its done and over. Hopefully won't have to do another one later in pregnancy considering I was 15.3 on Friday .
  • I did the 1 hr test a few days ago 16 wks because of having multiples. All clear and came back at 126. Phew!
