Help needed ... my kid is obessed with her butt!

Hi ladies, I could use any suggestions you guys have because I am kind of at my wit's end with my daughter.  She just turned 3 a few days ago and is mostly potty trained with the exception of wearing pull-ups at night.  For the last two weeks, she has been insisting there is something wrong with her butt.  Now it is keeping her from sleeping (she was up til 4 a.m. this morning). At random times she will demand to pull down her pants and check her butt and she is absolutely convinced it has a problem though she really doesn't explain if it hurts or burns or what the issue is.  She will scream and throw a fit until I let her get to a bathroom to check it. A lot of times she just ends up wiping it with half a roll of toilet paper.  Our daycare person said now she is randomly taking her pants off at daycare, which is obviously unacceptable.

We mentioned this during her 3-year wellness check to her doctor. While she is doing a urine test for a UTI, she thinks it's just a phase, though she did not physically examine the butt. I can't see anything wrong with it other than a very mild rash that has lingered for a while and she never complained about before.  She has not been around anyone new or different recently that we have any concerns about any type of abuse and I have questioned her about that as much as you can with a 3-year-old.

I could use any suggestions anyone has on this.  Is there something else I could be checking that could be causing her discomfort?  If it's just a phase how do I push through it because I am 7-months pregnant and I really, really need to get back to our sleep routine. While it bothers her during the day, it's much more of a problem at night.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Is it her actual rectum or her butt cheeks?

Have her bowel movements changed in frequency? Maybe she is feeling like she needs to poop but can't?

Have you been eating spicy food and maybe that is burning her rectum?

Maybe her underwear is too tight and is giving her a wedgie?

Are you trying any cream to get rid of the rash?

I don't really have an advice :( I would try to add some diaper cream to her bottom before bed and tell her "this cream helps your bottom so we don't have to check it any more tonight. In the morning we can check it though!" and then in the morning say how much better her bottom is. I would probably go the psychological route.

I think the cream suggestion is a good one. Sometimes I think just knowing that something is supposed to help does help. Kind of like applying a band-aid to a scratch that doesn't really need a band-aid.

  • I know this sounds odd, but is it possible that she has a hemorrhoid? My daughter used to struggle with constipation and had one when she was younger. It could cause her to feel like something is stuck in there or it could just be sore. I don't know... I feel like I would maybe take her back to the doctor and ask for them to do an examination. It sounds like this is really bothering your daughter.

  • I know this sounds totally disgusting, but any change she stuck something in there? My nephew was telling my sister his butt hurt- turned out he had a Lego in there.

  • Has she been checked for pinworms? I know it sounds gross, but if she's generally only having this issue at night or when resting... that's pretty common with pinworms, and she would definitely be feeling discomfort from them. I'm not trying to scare you, pinworms aren't really a big deal, but they do need to be treated to go away.
  • I heard constipation is very common with toddlers.  Does she need more fiber to be able to go?
  • Thanks ladies, between the holidays and lack of sleep I haven't been on here a lot but we did take come of your advice. We tried the cream route and it helped a bit and we did have her checked for pinworms.  I think for the most part it's an attention/power struggle thing because two doctors have not had any suggestions about a medical issue.

  • I'm sorry, but she has a rash. I guess I don't understand how that isn't a concern with this behavior. It could be the rash hurts or burns and is irritated or bothering her more than you think. Also it doesn't sound like you're even asking her about it. My kiddo isn't 3 but she can communicate if something is bothering her and where.
