Pregnant after a Loss

cerclage and progesterone shots

I had my first appointment today complete with an ultrasound. Everything looks good, baby is measuring at 7w5d which is a few days less than we thought it should be (8w2d) but my doctor isnt concerned. I probably just ovulated late.

Anyway, she is recommending that I get a cerclage done. Even though what happened to me before was clearly preterm labor with no signs of cervical incompetence, she wants me to get it just to be on the safe side. Also, starting at 16 weeks I have to go in every week for a progesterone shot. She said they are super painful but super effective.

Have any of you ladies ever had a cerclage? What can I expect from it?

Re: cerclage and progesterone shots

  • I have a cerclage but never did progesterone shots. My cervix was shortening at 22 weeks so I had an emergency cerlcage and I'm now 33 weeks and everything looks good! The procedure wasn't bad, I needed an epidural for it and went home from the hospital the same day. Good luck!

  • I don't have a cerclage, but I get the progesterone shots every week, and they aren't painful at all.

  • Both myself and @Samuelismomma ‌ have (had) cerclages. Go for the sedation. I took oral progesterone but have low progesterone. Normally if you have the cerclage you don't also need progesterone unless your level is low.

    Cerclage=pelvic rest (no sex)
    Progesterone=worsened constipation and n/v

    But! Samuellismomma just had her rainbow and I'm 32+4.

  • No experience with a cerclage, but I get the 17P shot weekly and I am the most pregnant I've ever been! The shot itself isn't too painful, but sometimes I get a lump at the injection site and its itchy. A warm compress usually helps.

  • ...LO mentioned...

    My son was IVF and I had to give myself progesterone shots daily from the day of the insemination until I was 12 weeks pregnant. Not please, but not too bad once you get used to it. :)
  • I'm in the opposite position. My last loss was because of IC not PTL. I just had a cerclage done 2 weeks ago & will be starting P17 shots on Monday off the off chance that they could also help. The cerclage was fine. I was given a spinal, so I was awake for the entire procedure but felt nothing. I didn't love the spinal, but only because it took about 2 hours to fully wear off. It was awkward to be awake in a room of 6 people while spread-eagle, but totally fine other than that. I had some period-like cramping & spotting for a few hours after the procedure, but felt fine after that. My doc had me admitted for overnight observation just because he is a little over-cautious. I've felt fine since then. I've been on pelvic rest, but since my cervix has lengthened since the procedure, he's considering lifting that in a few more weeks.
