STM That had an EPI previously question

How many cm's dilated were you when you got your epi and how long after receiving the epi did you deliver?  Any special circumstances such as being induced that you feel may have effected the timing/use of an epi?  Gestational age at delivery?

  • I Was 8 cm when they placed it. I was pushing less than an hour later and had dd an hour after that. I Had labored for 12 hours by the time I got my epidural and I feel like either my body needed the epidural to relax enough to transition,or I had done most of the labor without "assistance" that it was just good timing. Either way I'll be waiting as long as possible before I get it again. I was not induced, no pitocin. I was 24 with dd and will be 26 when I deliver this time.

  • I was induced with DD. I got the epi at 6cm and they broke my water. DD was born almost 7hrs later and was almost an emergency c-section because she got stuck.

    9cm.

Got my epi at 8am & delivered at 2pm

I went a lot longer than most I think. My original goal was med-free birth like I had for my daughter. However, my anxiety & some HR decels for DS made the epi a great choice for me to relax so I could labor down.

    Gestational age at delivery?
    41 weeks & 2 days

  • I think I was around 3-4 cm

Got epi at 8 am, no special reason, they offered it at that point, I accepted. I started pushing at 11:30, had my baby at noon.

I was induced at 39 weeks.
  • With DD I was 5 cm when I got an epi. I was 40 weeks. I got my epi around 10am and she was born at 648pm after pushing about 1h40m.

With DS I was 40w2d. I was 6cm when I got the epi and I for it around 1130pm. He was born 3 hours later after about 15 mins of pushing.

No special circumstances either time. The epi really helped me relax especially with DS since that labor progressed faster.

39w2d, I was not induced. My water broke at home at 11:30pm. We got to the hospital around 1am. Epi was placed around 3am, and I think I was already 7-8cm by that point. DS was born at 5:25am. No special circumstances. I'm glad I got the epi because contractions were getting pretty uncomfortable at that point, and I don't know how bad the rest of the L&D would have felt without it.
  • 38 weeks water broke at home at 1cm. Epi placed at 4 cm. worked til I got to 7cm then stopped. DS born 4 hrs after initial placement. 39 weeks water broke at home at 1cm. Epi placed at 5 cm. Took awhile to progress as she was sunny side up. Born 5 hours after initial placement.

  • I don't seem to dilate easily or well or tolerate labor very well! My plan was to wait as long as I could and then get the epi. I did not expect the level of pain I had at only a few cm dilated each time. I did end up being induced each time and had zero or close to zero progress each time going in.

With my first, I got the epi at maybe only 3 cm or so, but I had been having hard contractions for hours already after cervadil overnight. I was in a lot of pain and had already tried Stadol (that was a mistake). It was an induction and I had zero progress going in. Epi was a Godsend. Delivered about 13 hours later, maybe? Not sure. Baby was 40w4days.

Next baby I got the epi again at maybe 3 or 4 cm, but was TOTALLY in pain. The anesthesiologist thought I was way further along by looking at me, but I knew I wasn't. :) That time my water broke but I was barely 1 cm going in and needed pitocin again to have any contractions. Baby born maybe 9 hours or so later? Things went better overall with the second one. He was born at 41 weeks.

    Third was a c-section.

  • STM attempting no epi this time.  I'm ok with Stadol, Nubain if needed.

Low-risk pg, no induction, 40wks.  Arrived at hospital 5-6cm dilated (quite uncomfortable but not really pain) and requested epi.  Took an hour before anesthesiologist available.  Epi worked within the appropriate timeframe.  IV bag of fluids (to avoid hypotension common w/epi) & Foley catheter also inserted.  Strict bedrest and nurses would rotate me to each side to keep meds working properly (all standard). I never clicked the button for a bolus dose.

Epi stalled my labor so Pitocin drip started.  Baby started having decelerations so oxygen put on me & repositioned.  Went to push and contrx stalled out.  Pitocin increased.  Baby delivered hour later.  Lower Apagars at 1min but improved at 5min.

  • My water leaked at 38 weeks, 6 days. Was given pitocin at around 4am Sunday and started having more contractions. At about 8 pm my water finally broke and I got the epidural at about 9pm at 4-5cm. I didn't deliver until 7:53 Monday morning. I likely could have delivered around 6 am but the epidural worked a little too well and I couldn't even feel my legs. I only pushed 2-3x and felt nothing (in my opinion- definitely the way to go!). Definitely a loooonnnng couple of days but I don't think the epidural slowed anything down.
  • Thanks everyone. I was hoping to go without meds but due to a late diagnosis of GD they said the baby has a particularly large abdominal
measurement so they expect delivery may be extra difficult (baby getting stuck). Also due to the complications associated with GD they want to induce next week at 39+ a day or two. I know it sounds crazy but I really don't think my body is anywhere near going into labor on its own. The MW office has been closed for 2 weeks so I have yet to have a cervical exam or anything but baby is still sitting pretty high, no real BH and no loss of mucus plug. Just think I'm headed into an uphill battle and trying to gauge the best way to face it. Thanks for insight into what to expect.

  • I was 9cm and had been in labor for... I don't know.  Well over 24 hours at that point.  I got the epi so I could sleep a few hours.  I started pushing about an hour after I woke up, pushed for 40 minutes or so.  I think the epi was super strong so I could sleep, but it definitely made it hard to push.

  • I was induced at 39w3d. Waited until I was 4cm to request the epidural. I think it was in place around 1PM. I was 8cm at 2:45. I started pushing at 4:40PM (after laboring down for a half hour or so) and delivered DS at 5:21PM.

My best friend was induced with her second baby, and she had the epidural placed before they started pitocin. She felt one contraction and said the whole thing was amazing. That's what I'm going to do if I'm lucky enough to have another baby.
  • 1.5 cm dilated (but hear me out) and I delivered 3 hours after getting the epidural. I had contractions 1.5 minutes apart for 8 hours and progressed .5 cm that whole time. My body wouldn't relax enough to progress (according to my nurses and docs) and once I got the epidural, I went from a 1.5 to a 6 in an hour. my water broke at 2 a.m. and I was .5 cm dilated. I was in labor for 17 hours before I got the epidural. I got pitocin and was 40 weeks and 5 days.
  • 3 cm with an induction. Pitocin is a bitch! Never progressed beyond 3 cm even after they broke my water. She was delivered 24 hours later by csec at 11.1 pounds.
  • I got an epi after around 36 hours of labor (40 weeks gestation) at 4 cm (I'd stalled at 4cm for over 6 hours and they administered pitocin so I got the epi just before they started the drip). LO was born 10 hours later after 3 hours of pushing.

I was 41 weeks pregnant, had been up for three days with contractions, in actual labor for about 19 hours when I got my epi. I was stalled at 8cm for 5 hours at that point, waters broken.

After the epi I slept for 2 hours and was complete and ready to push. ETA: I pushed for just about 3 hours, but that was more likely due to the fact that I was exhausted and she was over 9lbs.

  • I was induced at 40+1 i back laboured for 28 hours before asking for the epi as I didn't want it. They gave it to me two hours later by that point my body was ready to push but they didn't heck me till right after they put in the epidural I was 9.5 cm dilated and started pushing right away ds was born 4 hours later.

I regret getting the epi at that point as I probably wouldn't have had to push so long had I not gotten it.
  • Went into labor 40+1, but didn't deliver until the next day. Got both an epi and started Pitocin around 4cm after laboring around 15 hours without much progress. Delivered about 3-4 hours later.
