Was reading about the difference. Seems significant enough to ask if any of you are taking Folate instead of FA? If so, where did you get it and how much do you take?
I went online and bought Garden of Life, Kind Organic Prenatal Multi vitamins from Amazon. Depending on the size bottle you buy, it can range from $30-50. They have 800mcg Folate instead of folic and you take one daily. I was taking other prenantal vitamins before with folic acid until I came across an article about the differences, which prompted me to do more research. Hope that helps.
I have to take L-methylfolate because I have an MTHFR mutation and cannot process folic acid. I get my prenatals from Amazon and use Thorne Basic Research.
Me: 30 DH: 32
TFAS since May 2013
8/14 - Bloodwork showed heterozygous MTHFR gene mutation and elevated AMH (but no cysts)
9/14 - HSG, Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy showed tubes clear, but found and removed Endometriosis, scar tissue and 2 small benign masses on my tubes.
11/14 - Daily ultrasounds confirmed that my follicles are not releasing the egg and every other day blood draws showed very low progesterone... DH's SA was near perfect
12/14 - moving onto meds!!! Hold up!!! Surprise BFP after only taking the progesterone! Now what do I do with all of the other meds we already paid for?! Due at the end of August 2015 Beta#1- 4434 @ 22DPO Beta#2 - 7335 @ 25DPO Beta #3 - 14429 @ 28DPO
@ShellyR Does your Dr. have you doing anything else special because of the MTHFR?

So, I wanted to give me experience/reply. I have had two previous miscarriages this year (Feb, July) at around 5 weeks each time. I knew I had Factor V but after some testing following our second loss I found out I have MTHFR as well. I started 4 mg FOLIC ACID daily and now I just saw our baby for the second time this morning! 8 weeks 5 days and 172 bpm! (never got far enough to see a HB with the losses) Folic Acid does work for MTHFR imo. From the research I did we can absorb it, but at about 30-60% of the normal rate. As long as you take enough (4mg or so) I think it will help. Also, from what I can tell any excess is just expelled through our urine. So, while I am not saying Folate is bad or doesn't work, I am saying that Folic Acid is working for me.
Just a fyi but I am also taking Lovenox for potential clotting issues as well. I wish you all the best of luck!
I'm on a special 5mg extra folic acid pill plus my prenatal has 1000 mcg I had delivered a baby at 22 weeks with a ntd so they have me on a higher dose
@megastar007 , not yet, but I kind of wish I woukd have inquired about taking Aspirin 81mg early on. I'm almost 10 weeks now so it is a little late in the game. I tested + on the Counsyl test when we were trying to rule out a different recessive disease that runs in my family. I also take 1200mcg of folm acid a day separate from the prenatals to cover the bases.
TTC since Sept. 2013
09/14: New anterior 3cm Fibroid on U/S, no change in size 11/14
My son (5 years old) has spina bifida so my doctor told me to take 5mg of folate (5x) the normal dose at least three months before trying and I've been taking the prescription for over a year. Praying our baby doesn't have spina bifida or other birth defects, but honestly, my son is the most amazing little boy regardless.
This is what I take - it having folate over folic acid was a big factor in my choosing. I don't have MFTHR but my two kids were tongue tied and I did some research that showed folate during pregnancy could help reduce midline defects such as tongue and lip ties. We will see...
Re: Folate or Folic Acid??
My OB wanted me to have at least 1000 mcg per day. My prenatal gives me 600 and I added a 400 mcg supplement from CVS to get the rest.
