Going on leave

I am 34 weeks and a massage therapist. I was just wondering how early or even if anyone decided to take leave before the baby came and how far in advance?? I am struggling at work because my job is so physical but most of the other girls that have been pregnant have made it farther than I am, I was just curious if anyone else is taking time off before the baby gets here.

Re: Going on leave

  • I stopped working in September, but I have a job that only requires me to work 6 days a year so it was NBD for me to do so.

  • Unfortunately for me, my paycheck pays the majority of the bills so I have to go based on what will be approved for my STD. The earliest I can go out is 2 weeks before my due date, so I'll be working until the end of the month.
  • I'll be working until jan 31. Dd is 02/07 I get a year leave but I'm hoping to hold on until end of this month. I have a desk job. If I had a physical job I'd prob go soon.
  • I left work a few weeks ago. Everyone and every pregnancy is different. Don't try to stick it out past what you feel comfortable doing. I left at 32 weeks. I was planning on leaving at 36 weeks but I was tired so I stopped earlier.

I worked nights at the front desk of a hotel.

  • My last day is supposed to be 1/30 and my EDD is 2/07. I'm willing to go earlier if my body tells me I need to, though. However, I'm a teacher and a control freak (hate the thought of someone else doing my job) so I wanted to go as long as I could. Hopefully DD hangs on until after the 30th so I don't go into labor while at school. That would not be enjoyable.
  • I'm 35 weeks tomorrow and next Friday will be my last day. I work in retail, so I am on my feet all the time. Just 4 more work days left for me :)

  • I'm in Canada, and you can leave up to six weeks prior to your due date. So I usually left at 34 weeks.

This time I have to work to a day past my due date so I can make up the 600 hours of work to qualify for EI. I'll probably take that last week as vacation, though.

Good thing this pregnancy has been really easy on me and I still have a lot of energy. Other than sore hips and waddling quite a bit, I feel pretty normal. :)

  • In my state you could qualify for short term disability 4weeks before your due date and 6 weeks after baby was born but you can't combine them (ie take 10 weeks after birth).

I'm a sahm this time around but with my first I took all 4 weeks before birth since otherwise I wouldn't be able to use it. I was also a nanny so the job was pretty physical. I was happy with the time off. If I were working, I would do the same

If I didn't have those benefits though it would definitely depend on our finances and my physical health so it's hard to say!

  • I'm working up until either he's born or my doctor says I can't. However, I have a desk job.

My leave is unpaid and I don't have std.

If you feel you can't make it, don't push yourself.

  • I'm tapering off the schedule, slowly. I am the boss, so that makes things a bit easier. I've been going in and checking in with my staff and running morning errands for them. I do about 4-5 hours almost everyday. I'm trying to limit the amount of standing I do. I just started having SPD, hours of standing doesn't help. However baking requires a lot of standing. I broke down crying the other night because I took on a long baking shift and my hips and left leg started to really hurt after 3 hours of standing. I took on the shift, in order to give my staff Christmas off. That was the last time and I spoke with everyone and told them, I can't do any long baking shifts anymore. I need to listen to my body. So it's waddling in for check ins and that's it! Luckily I live next door to my shop.
  • I work for myself so I plan to stop working the first week of Feb or second week. I'm 32 weeks now and dr said I could go into labor after 5 more weeks. My mom went early with all of hers so I may follow her lead. But do what you feel most comfortable with.
  • I work for myself, and I'm stopping the second week of this month. I'm having a hard time just getting up and down...I'm doing a lot of my computer work from my laptop in my new recliner. It's the only place I can get comfortable.

It's different for everyone. Do what you can and know when enough is enough. Good luck momma.

  • I'm starting maternity leave tomorrow but I don't plan on returning to work after my leave is up so that's why I'm taking it early. I also have a very physical job (personal trainer) I'm super excited to be done working!
  • Unexpectedly I worked until I was admitted. I had been working half days for 2 weeks before that point. Don't think I would've returned from this winter break if I hadn't had the girls right before it started.

  • I have a desk job and will start working from home 100% on Jan 19th, 37w 2d for me. I feel guilty not going into the office, but even this week my coworkers were suggesting I start working from home more, so it helps that they are supportive. I also enjoy actually seeing my coworkers rather than just working remotely, so I will miss the daily interactions. However, it's a 45-60 min drive to my hospital from work during the weekly traffic, and I do not want to mess with that.

I will work remotely from home until I go to the hospital or until I'm just not willing or able to any longer.

  • Everyone is different. Do what you feel comfortable.

I'm a cardiac ICU RN and get 12 weeks FMLA.  At this point, I've scheduled myself up until my due date as I've had a low-risk pg and still feeling ok and put the remaining shifts as FMLA.  My boss knows I'm willing to pick up until the last minute to maximize my time off post-baby.

  • I plan on working until I go into labor as well. I'm a teacher and would love to go out early but it is financially not possible for us. Personally, I would rather maximize my days home with a baby in my arms.
  • I'm working until baby decides to arrive or my doctor says to stop. I'm an assistant store manager of a convenience store.....i.e. on my feet, running around for at least 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. Thank God for a very easy, very low risk pregnancy, because my paycheck pays most of our bills! I'm wanting to spend as much time as possible with baby before having to go back to work :(
  • I stopped working on December 19th at 32 weeks. I ran my own dayhome and it was just starting to be way too physically demanding and stressful. My situation is probably a lot different though, I am in Canada so maternity leave is much longer (although being self employed for a short while, I won't be able to collect anyway). If you're able to afford to leave early then go for it and don't feel guilty for not working up until the very end!
  • I was planning to work up until I go into labor, but I've been getting a lot of pelvic pain after busy shifts and don't move so good. So as of now I've decided to start my leave on my due date. But I might try to get light duty or half shifts depending how things go between now and then.
  • Next Thursday is my last day. I will be 36.5 weeks at that point. Maybe start tapering off if you're uncomfortable. You could always try working 3 days/week to see if that helps any. Don't worry who has made it farther working than you. I am measuring at 40 weeks so I feel a lot worse than I should at this point. Just do what is best for YOU! Good luck!

  • Two more weeks at work, then one week of vacay and then straight into mat leave (Due Jan 26 or Feb 3rd depending on who you ask). Another Canadian here. I wanted to leave earlier, but I need as many full paychecks as I can get before my year of broke leave.

  • I am lucky enough that I get topped up to full pay by my employer for the whole year. I never realized what a blessing that is until I had babies. :)

So jealous! I make over the cap so I get the whopping 2k a month. My  husband and I have been saving since I got pregnant though to make up for the like 30k pay cut I will be taking during mat leave. But I am still thankful  I get something!

I am a teacher as well and it is hard to let someone else teach my students. I have been on bed rest since 10/28 with a c-section scheduled for 2/2. My doctor and I are talking about me possibly going back for the rest of this month, but my body is saying stay in bed. If your job is too hard on you physically and you have the time....take your leave early. Enjoy the remainder of your pregnancy.
  • And my leave officially starts Monday--- doc put me off work. So 34 weeks I made it.

  • Dr took me off as of today at almost 35 weeks. Because I don't get paid if i don't work I'm hoping to just work the rest of the month

I'm a CICU nurse too. I worked up until my due date with my last pregnancy & plan on doing that again this time. Sometimes the 12hr shifts turn into longer shifts & the days are long but I'd rather be off with my baby for the 12wks postpartum than take time off before he's here. Unless because of medical necessity of course:) I was full time with my first & part time since he was born. I've recently gone PRN (as needed) which means I only work one or two shifts/wk which is better.
